Manticora's Black Circus albums
Iron Maiden (great band, dont get me wrong, probably wouldn't even make my top 50 bands though, Im just not hearing that something that makes them so special)
Hammerfall's first 2 albums

Underrated:
James LaBrie as a vocalist (he is amazing in Dream Theater, Mullmuzzler and his last solo album)
Virgin Steele (People who know the band, love the band but I don't see them mentioned alot at all and they deserve more recognition)
Virgin Steele's Visions of Eden album
Jon Oliva's Pain (3 albums that rival some of Savatage's best)
Messiah's Kiss - Dragonheart album (Heard alot of negatives for this album but picked it up anyways and its pretty awesome)
Threshold

Kamelot is definitely not overrated!

Well seeing as how I can't stand them one bit, I think they are :P

And yeah, with James LaBrie, even by alot of fans he seems to be considered the weakest link of the band and while Dream Theater is certainly popular, Mullmuzzler and his last solo album weren't all that big and they certainly deserve to be. So I am not saying Dream Theater is underrated, but LaBrie himself as a vocalist to me seems to be.

Roy Khan would suffice.

You seem to be mixing up hate and overrated. hating on a band does not equate to being overrated you know...

Well I'm always hearing about how amazing of a band they are and I listened to a couple of albums and I can't hear anything musically redeeming, at least to the point that everyone loves them so much. Its not hate, its just I cant understand where all the love comes from. For me they are a lower tier power metal band.

If you ask me I consider them more prog than power metal, and I really wonder which albums you actually listened to? Epica ? Karma ?

Epica and The Black Halo and random songs from others that people told me to listen to over the years. Someone once told me that Center of The Universe was one of the greatest power metal songs ever written, ugh.

I suppose prog probably fits into their genre description as well, I heard their last album goes more in that direction and it was certainly there on The Black Halo.

Didn't he sing in some prog band before Kamelot?

Dream Theater would be so awesome if they were Roy Khan, Jeff Loomis, Gene Hoglan, Brett Bamberger (i had to dig pretty deep to find a good prog metal bassist  ) , and uhh.... well keyboardists are lame.

As is The Sword, but at least keyboardists add something original from time to time. Nyuk.

no they don't

also there aren't any bands that sound like The Sword beyond the obvious mid-paced doom metal sound. Valkyrie come close but their songs are filled with lengthy Wishbone Ash-style jams and The Sword don't do that

So where would Neurosis be without their keys?

I take personal offence to this. How dare you insult me over teh intarwebs . I DEMAND SATISFACTION!

But anyways, I find Epica, Within Temptation, new After Forever and every other generic female fronted power metal to be way way overrated.

probably better off because they'd use real instruments instead; for example compare the violin in the last half of "Chronology of Survival" to the synths on "Stripped".

also probably should've been more specific: i was thinking in a prog metal context, where they tend to favour synthesizers over than natural sounds/real instruments like pianos or hammond organs or ondes martinot or whatnot. the way Neurosis use synths is better than the way prog bands use them because they use them for atmosphere rather than playing melodic parts and solos with them. even then they can sound good used for stuff beyond atmosphere (example: Pj Harvey - Under the Water) i've just never heard a metal band do it.

I somewhat agree. Keyboards can be very annoying when played for guitar solos or overlaps a guitar solo but when done for the atmosphere like in Dark Tranquility's case, they are great.

I'm going to have to support the Kamelot argument. I think they are overrated as well. I mean, they're good... but not that good. They have some songs that I really enjoy and will listen to now and then, but for the most part they collect dust on my shelf. I think its due in part to Roy Khan. He has no range... none. He isn't a bad vocalist, but there are so many more that are twenty times better. Just my opinion.

I find this funny, because I usually agree with almost everything you like grandbazaar... but not Silent Man. He is my arch nemesis.

Wow, I think Khan is definately the best part of Kamelot. He has a beautiful voice IMO. His voice is warm and full of passion. I agree on the range thing though. But his falsettos are damn awesome.
