I'll be truthful and admit that, of all the Opeth albums I own (basically everything after Still Life), this is probably the weakest. The songs just aren't as powerful or grandiose as they were on Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries, and the songs are rather plodding and directionless compared to other Opeth albums.

Plus, if Opeth really wanted that whole heavy/light contrast with Deliverance and Damnation, what they really should've done was do away with the clean vocals and soft/acoustic passages on Deliverance altogether and make it a straight-up, no-holds-barred prog-death album.

I may sound like I'm totally ripping this album apart, but I do still think it's a great album. If it were by any ordinary prog band, I wouldn't be complaining. But being an Opeth album, I do have to compare it to their other albums.

It still gets an easy "Hit" from me.

I think that youre mistaking deliverance for ghost reveries being the weakest opeth.

Sir, Ghost Reveries is far from being the weakest Opeth (though I admit it would be much weaker if The Grand Conjuration was omitted). If anything, their weakest would be their debut album.

+1, from the albums I heard so far. Though a few people think that Morningrise is their best, but I still have to hear it.

Morningrise is not their best at all imo. I like their newer stuff much better. Morningrise sounds too unfinished, and probably a bit lengthy.

Aye, I reckon Morningrise is their weakest, despite what I said in my Orchid review.

Morningrise was a vast improvement over Orchid. It was still a bit disjointed, but it was just a lot more pleasing to listen to. It feels a lot better than Orchid, if you get my drift.

EDIT: Plus, To Bid You Farewell is one of their best tracks ever.

imo Orchid is their weakest, it's the only one where a song will get to like the 4 minute mark and i'm like "omfg there's still 6 minutes left"

Because it's awesome.

I dunno if it's the best starting point, but it is a great album.

I take back any negativity I said about Orchid, I heard it properly this morning and I really fucking like it, its probably better than Watershed, IMO. The riffs are really awesome, all that is slacking is a little sophistication with the acoustic sections and too many silent bits, but otherwise it's really good. 8/10

I'm glad I got Ghost Reveries before Morningrise actually.

Definitely, I still thinj that GR is the best album to introduce people to Opeth, it's their most balanced in terms of acoustic/heavy parts and the songs themselves are killer.

Agreed with that, although Still Life's a good second choice.

Probably, actually Still Life is my favourite album, followed by GR then MAYH. BP is the only Opeth album I still have to listen to properly.

that's exactly how i feel when listening to any opeth album.

deliverance is awful even by their standards.

I've grown to like it over the past few days. The lack of mellow songs makes it a bit hard to stomach, but the heavy stuff is some of te best they've written.

hmm.... The lack of mellow songs may be the thing that makesme buy it, not a fan of those in particular.
