Post subject: Why does everyone like Nightwish?
PostPosted: Wed Apr 13, 2005 9:12 pm
From what I've heard, I hate them, with a passion. I don't see what's the big deal is, I hate the singers voice, and I just dislike them.

Someone tell me why they're so "good"?

First off, it's understandable why some people don't like them. To mix female operatic soprano vocals with metal can be a bit too much for some (just ask my wife, hehehe). It's a band that most either love or hate.

For me personally...
I love female vocals, and I was amazed the first time I heard Nightwish years ago. As if the vocals aren't appealing enough, they're a perfect fit musically for my tastes. I've always been a huge fan of orchestral/symphonic power metal, and Nightwish is as good as anybody musically. :)

So many will understand your complaint, but not agree with it. It's amazing how people have such different tastes. That's the reason there are "profile" pages of the other reviewers and myself on the Metal CD Ratings site, so fans reading our reviews can understand them better. 8)

Hope this clears things up for you... :D

Nightwish understandably aren't for everyone. If I heard them say five years ago I would hate them too. But recently I've gravitated toward the more epic sound. Personally I find this sort of music to be less "angry man's metal" and more "get the most out of it metal". It is nothing to do with image and everything to do with musicianship. Old Nightwish sounds a little naff with the synthesisers and all, but Once gets to utilise a full orchestra and that is awesome. I just love the sheer scale of it, particularly Ghost Love Score. Bliss!

I just saw Nightwish in play in Brissie about a month ago and...holy shit! That was my post under 'Luciferi' in Hellheim. It was impossible to watch the rest of the band because Tarja....oohh....Tarja.....gotta go wanksalot!

Just kidding.

She was phenominal, as were the entire band. Marco was a bloody funny bastard and the little guitarist (forgot his name) was having so much fun he reminded me of Dave Murray.

The first time I heard their music I didn't dig them either.
I started liking them 3 months later after re-listening to some
of their songs. I like nightwish mostly because of their very melodic symphonic sound. The vocals are great and the songs are catchy as hell for metal. If you don't like music with keyboards I understand why you wouldn't like it cause at times it's a little overdone(the keyboards).

Nightwish sounds solid and have great vocals. If I would recommend any metalband to someone it would be Nightwish to begin with. I know they got me hooked ever since I heard Slaying the dreamer.

Personally I like them because their songwriting is much better than most other female fronted gothic bands.. Ghost Love Score might be the best song in that entire genre, heehee.

Apparently the keyboard player writes all the songs? That's probably why they're all so drenched with synth and strings.

I worship Nightwish...

Tarja is a metal goddess. Period.

The songs rules!

The production is almost perfect.

I'd call Nightwish metal gods but that's only my opinion...anyways...amazing band!

:P

I heard about Nightwish a few years ago from a friend online and bought "Oceanborn" and "Wishmaster" after hearing some snipets of their songs. I really liked "Oceanborn" from the opening notes, and I still do. "Wishmaster" didn't quite do as much for me, but I liked that one too.

When "Century Child" finally came out in the US, I bought it soon after, and I was at first disappointed. They definately changed their sound a fair amount, but after a couple of spins it grew on me, and I probably like it more than "Wishmaster".

"Once", however, is just horrid. I think the band really lost it with this one. I know those who are into epic, lush, and full sounding metal tend to like this one a lot, especially with the orchestra... But I just find it to be lacking just about everything the band once had going for it. Oh well...

The point I'd like to make is that if you're unsure about the band and have only heard "Once" or even "Century Child", you might go back and look at their earlier material. Personally, I think it's a lot more interesting. Lots of keys though.

If it wasn't for Nightwish I would not be into metal today, they helped break down the wall for me.. Before Nightwish I couldn't stand metal, it sounded like crap to me, just a bunch of noise, but I just wasnt listening to it in the way metal requires.

Anyways, Nightwish is my favorite band, I think they are great, I have seen them live once and it was one of the greatest things I have ever seen, they sound better live than on the albums, which is rare from what I have seen.

Oceanborn IMO is a metal masterpiece. I have heard many bands and many albums over the past 3 years I've been into metal and none have hooked me like this. The only exceptions being (Savatage, JOP and Virgin Steele's "Invictus"). And even those don't measure up. Oceanborn is the perfect album, I never get bored of it, I never skip a song and I can never put it on when I need to go somewhere because it makes me wanna hear it all.

As for the rest of the albums by them, I think they are all great in their own way. Just for the hell of it, here are some ratings from me: Angels Fall First - 78/100 (very bad production, but I love the songs), Oceanborn - 100/100 (My fav album), Wishmaster - 85/100 (A really good album, but a little disjointed, I cant listen to it all in one sit, usually), Century Child - 93/100 (Truely amazing work), Once - 90/100 (A great album, unfortunately 2 songs on it feel like filler.. The rest is great though).

I would rate them:

Oceanborn--94/100
Wishmaster--79/100
Century Child--91/100
Once--96/100

The 1st one I don't have yet.
