Ok,ok [attention, german language] habe Sodom aus der negativen Liste rausgenommen. Wobei am Anfang waren sie schon eher sehr ernst, genau wie die letzten Alben (Code Red, Sodom, M16).

But back to english.

Yes, but still they did "surfin' bird" cover on a M-16 album and I find it rather funny...

Whereas it depends.

The Anthrax, Tankard or Death Angel thrash is energy, rage and fun.

The Slayer, Dark Angel, Kreator or Destruction thrash is hate, nihilism, aggression, negativity, rage and everything but not fun.

The Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, EDIT Sodom or Metallica thrash is somewhere in the middle.

On the other side, the Darkthrone or Venom Black Metal is sometimes also funny.

Thrash is not always this and black is not always that, because there are different variations in the style of the bands.

Also like Bal Sagoth and Carpathian Forest, which are funny.

So alot of people like BM here and I have to say I prefer thrash. Alot of black metal has the vocal tracks overpowered by guitar which is hard to make out the riffs. I am incredibly picky some BM can be good but death and thrash metal just have so much more appeal. I see alot of differing styles between thrash bands. However black metal can mesh together sometimes.

I'd have to disagree with you there. In the thrash genre, everyone wants to sound like a band from the eighties, because they're literally caught in time. Too stubborn to change, and too limited to evolve without descending into a pit of massive suckage.

That's not to say there isn't any unique bands. Though at the moment, the only two I can name are Voivod and Mekong Delta; the former being a rock band, now.

However, if we disregard the massive amount of black metal bands who want to sound exactly like Darkthrone, you'll find that there are a ton of unique sounds. Listen to Mayhem, Leviathan, Axis Of Perdition and Burzum, and tell me these bands sound the same. Hell, even the ones who take a distinctive sound do awesome things with it. Just check out Inferi or Verdunkeln for a unique take on the 'Burzum sound'.

Oh yeah, and riffs are overrated.

Agreed. Riffs are what a song can be built off of. They make the song. Sure a song can have an amazing solo however without smooth transistions and a solid riff the song seems sloppy.

Perhaps. However, black metal is more about the atomsphere, so one shouldn't go in expecting some killing riff that'll make you shit your pants. Although there are some blackened bands who specialize in said riffing, like Crebain and (again) Leviathan.

I've always wanted to check out Leviathan, they are on my list. The more I read/hear people talk about them, the more I want to hear them.

In my eyes, it sets those apart who listen to metal just for the riffs, and those who listen to metal for the emotional impact. It's why some of us can sit through hour long ambient/drone music.

Then please, recommend me some bands who don't sound like the 'Big Four'.

Try any German band: Kreator or Sodom, they sound nothing like US Thrash. Eben thrash from NY (Anthrax), which is more Hardcore influenced and Thrash from the Bay-Area sound different (Metallica, Megadeth etc.)

Metallica has a more epic sound, where slayer is like proto-death metal extreme.

Sepultura also sounds different

Celtic Frost or Hellhammer sound nothing like the big 4 either, their blackened thrash sounds more like Venom

Venom sounds very different too, with their NWOBHM/Thrash/Black mix

what about Voivod very progressive and different.

or bands like D.R.I. that play crossover thrash sound different too

Atheist, good example of thrash that sounds like nothing else, mix of Jazz/Thrash/Death

You see, thrash has endless variations, without thrash there would be no black metal or death metal, without thrash we wouldn't have the whole extreme metal scene we love today, thrash is the fondation of most metal today and overall the best genre in metal and music as a whole.

Enough said. Thrash 'till Death! :dio:

These bands may sound different but still use the same formulas or thrash riffing, the difference between them are not vast as, say, Deathspell Omega and Ved Buens Ende or Aborym and Urfaust or Krieg and Blut Aus Nord.

No youre wrong, you think theyre not as different but thats becasue thrash is not your main genre, for me all those bands you mentioned sounds the same.
