As much of a cliche it is, I tend to have favorite albums rather than favorite bands. I suppose The Mars Volta are a cut above everyone else, mind, simply because I'm still head-over-heels in love with them after listening to them every day for 5 months.

i've noticed me leaning more towards albums recently too. it's mostly because if a band only has one great album, i'll listen to that one album way more than the albums of a band that has like 5 great albums.

For me it's more because bands with great albums usually have discographies too small (Neutral Milk Hotel) or inconsistent (Peste Noire) to deserve "favorite band" status.

No particular order, outside of In Flames as my number one.

In Flames
Amon Amarth
Scar Symmetry
Kataklysm ( Yes, even after Prevail )
Arsis
Depeche Mode
Hypocrisy
Judas Priest
Megadeth
The Duskfall

The list generally stays the same but occasionally bands will come in and knock out my other favorites.

I definitely go more by favorite albums because for 95% of the bands I listen to, I haven't heard more than one or maybe two albums by them...the result of only being into music for about two years. But, as far as it goes, I'd say my favorite bands are...

Coheed and Cambria
Dream Theater
Mastodon
Wintersun
Blind Guardian
In Flames
Megadeth
Emperor
Dark Tranquillity

...in no particular order. Those are all bands I own more than one album by (except Wintersun, obviously)...however, stuff like Lift Your Skinny Fists to Heaven and Pale Folklore rank higher than a lot of albums by those bands, but they're the only albums I have from each respective band.

Actually, you can also add Anthrax and Dream Theater as among my favorite bands. Unfortunately, we could only list ten. And the ten I listed were just the ones that first sprang to mind when I wrote my message. Actually, if I could redo this post, I'd probably replace Iron Maiden with DT.

This must be the 10th top 10 list on this forum, I bet my list change all the time. Windir is probably the only band that keeps getting a spot - can't live without that band.

Amon Amarth
Drudkh
Nocternity
Gire/ Thy Catafalque (yes, that's cheating)

Bands who deserves mention:

Lunar Aurora

Bathory
Judas Iscariot
Burzum
Nyktalgia
Emperor (old)
Nargaroth (old)
Nokturnal Mortum
Satanic Warmaster
Wolves In The Throne Room
Toxic Holocaust
Skyforger

Whether it's due to average releases or key member changes my list would probably be different to a few years ago. Plus I like so many bands but my top 10 would probably be in no order:

Pagan's Mind , Therion , Circus Maximus , Brainstorm , Edguy , Gamma Ray , Symphony X , Redemption , Into Eternity and Heavenly.
