Depends how serious you are about it. If it's just for fun, learn some basic power chords, some riffs and move on from there... If you want to form a band and get an album reviewed on MR, pay for lessons!
I started out with lessons, but got quite disheartened because I wasn't playing anything cool to begin with, despite picking up the technicalities like tuning, finger-picking, scales, etc.
What saved me from burning my guitar was Nirvana!!!! (BTW, this was way back in 1992) Basically, I learnt their very simple riffing like 'Teen Spirit', 'In Bloom', etc and suddenly I was hooked! Next I progressed to riffs like Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man', 'Paranoid', next, some Hendrix, then Metallica, and not before long, I was ready for solos!!
The best advice I can give is be patient and practice!!
