So, I'm goin' to play some guitar, any advices for beginners?; what should I practice at first? any links to some good sites?

Depends how serious you are about it. If it's just for fun, learn some basic power chords, some riffs and move on from there... If you want to form a band and get an album reviewed on MR, pay for lessons!

I started out with lessons, but got quite disheartened because I wasn't playing anything cool to begin with, despite picking up the technicalities like tuning, finger-picking, scales, etc.

What saved me from burning my guitar was Nirvana!!!! (BTW, this was way back in 1992) Basically, I learnt their very simple riffing like 'Teen Spirit', 'In Bloom', etc and suddenly I was hooked! Next I progressed to riffs like Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man', 'Paranoid', next, some Hendrix, then Metallica, and not before long, I was ready for solos!!

The best advice I can give is be patient and practice!!

well... I'm all self-learned, but I wonder if I should take lessons with Ihsahn this summer. Use a metronome when your playing man!

I'd get a teacher, at least for a few months. You're going to want to start off slow- learning basic chords, blues, major and minor scales (with a metronome, of course) and practice your picking and strumming. You can do that by learning simpler songs- I started off with a lot of pop punk (Blink 182, Sum 41, etc...) but you may want to start off with stuff like Hammerfall and early Black Sabbath.

Get lessons with a teacher that is into the same stuff as you, that way you'll be taught in a way that'll be relevent to the stuff you want to play. Also they'll show you the basics properly, and will generally make learning things much easier as they will show you exactly how to do it and correct ay errors at an early stage. Despite what ever anyone else tells you, theory is essential. It separates the good musicians from the great and beyond.


And oh aye, practice outside your lessons (if you get them). Scales will improve your finger strength and dexterity, chord patterns will improve your strumming and abillity to switch between chords quickly. And you'll be needing them no matter what type of stuff you play.

As much as I hate lessons, it's actually very important. I never had any formal training and you can actually do without it, but it would harder and time consuming. Having a teacher is the best (and be prepared to fork out for it), you can learn techniques easier and faster.
