Manticora - Hyperion (sci-fi concept album the book is very much recomended)

I second this recommendation. 8 Deadly Sins is another sci fi Manticora album, and The Black Circus Parts I and II are horror/fantasy in the Lovecraft style.

I also think that Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time is pretty much the quintessential sci fi metal album. The whole album just oozes sci fi feel, mainly thanks to the synths.

I'm surprised no one said Bal Sagoth.

I will. That's my suggestion. Get The Power Cosmic or Battle Magic.

If you're looking for something outside of metal for Sci-Fi then try the Metroid Prime soundtracks.

Otherwise, a lot of Tarot stuff has Sci-Fi elements.

Nocturnus-The Key

first death metal album to use synths. A true classic.

Word.

Don't expect to find a copy for cheap. I paid $16 for it, used, like 10 years ago.

I know this is a little old, but here are some more recomendations:

Hollow - Architect of the Mind (concept album dealing with artificial intelligence)
Steel Prophet - Dark Hallucinations (concept album based on Fahrenheit 451)
Agent Steel - Order of the Illuminati (first 6 songs form a mini-concept album about a New World Order)
Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding (concept album based on the works of famous artist and alchemist William Blake)
