And I'm looking for more than cool cover art and a track or two about dragons or space colonies. I want a total other-worldly experience :). Preferably a concept album. Any genre.

Anything by Blind Guardian is other-worldly. Especially Somewhere Far Beyond, Imaginations From The Other Side and Nightfall In Middle-Earth. I assume you've already heard all of them though.

Then you should check out Ayreon A.S.A.P

Pretty much anything this guy does is a double concept album filled with music from metal, prog, blues, folk and electronica genres.

Try his Into The Electric Castle album as well as....anything else he has done really :D

Go to Arjen's site for samples.

Voivod !!!!

Nothingface and Dimension Hatross !

Kind of extreme if you're looking for Power Metal but an other-worldly experience for sure! :dio:

Any album by Rhapsody (Of Fire) will do.

I was going to say the same thing but The Necrodude beat me to it. Ayreon is probably among the best (if not THE) you can get for modern sci-fi metal, epic in scope and execution and with huntingly beautiful melodies. Follow Necrodude's advice (and mine) and you won't regret it.

:dio:

Royal Hunt's 'The Mission' sounds pretty sci-fi-ish, as it's based around Ray Bardbury's 'Martian Chronicles'. I'd give it a go.

Seconded.. Great stuff..

If you like Black Metal, you should check out Darkspace I. Raw yet atmospheric and really capturing a feeling of the cold endlessness of space. Complete with sci-fi references and everything. Stellar in more than one sense.

Yeah I have all of those albums :) . BG are awesome, though I'm not a huge fan of the Tolkien universe.

This is exactly the type of stuff I'm looking for! I've always seen Ayreon albums at the store but hesitated in buying them. Definitely gonna check this out.

I tend to lean toward Thrash, Black, Death, and industrial so it's all good :dio: . As for Voivod, I heard their self-titled album a while back. It was kind of whatever. Hopefully those two albums are better :)

Heard the Ulver, the BG, and the Hypocrisy. Good albums. I'll definitely check out that Septic Flesh since I'm really into their newest.

Gonna look into Scanner and Nocturnus too.

Oh, and if anyone is into hip-hop, Deltron 3030's self-titled album is the fucking shit. Post-Apocalyptic science fiction. Fantastic lyrics.
