I've never been a huge doom metal fan as the extremely slow pace of the songs puts me off well before the half-way mark on most songs, but this entire album captivated me. Holy shit. By the time Dopethrone came on I was totally engrossed in it, and Dopethrone just blew me away. Is all of EW's catalogue this good? Any other good suggestions for good doom metal?

Try here. My first recommendation there, Wreck Of The Hesperus, are awesome, as is the next band mentioned, Esoteric. Both should keep you happy for a while.

As for Electric Wizard, Adam's the one to ask, I'm a bit behind with them. If you like your Doom Metal absofuckinglutely skullcrushing, though, there's this band called Moss, I reviewed them for the site. Might be a bit much, though.

If you like Dopethrone, I would definitely check out Come My Fanatics... next. It's EW's other classic and just as good, if not better.

Here's a rundown of some other stoner/trad doom and stoner metal/sludge bands you might enjoy if you like EW:

Sleep
Reverend Bizarre
YOB
Solace
Eyehategod
Crowbar
Heavy Lord (anything except the new one)
Ramesses
Cathedral
Grand Magus
Church of Misery
Dragonauta

Thanks for the suggestions. I never liked Crowbar much, though.

Ah, well then I'd scratch Eyehategod off that list as well.

What do you think of Cathedral? If you haven't heard them yet that would be the most essential starting point IMO. They have a sound that could be a less extreme and more hard-rocking version of EW.

All of Adam's list is probably worth checking out but Cathedral are my favourite doom band ever.

I haven't even gotten past listening to Dopethrone. I'm at listen #7 or 8 and it keeps blowing me away. I think this is the best doom metal could ever possibly hope to be. Jesus.

You REALLY need to listen Come My Fanatics... soon. You'll love it.

I listened to it, but not hard. It felt too upbeat and happy, but it was more complicated. I'll give it more listens, though.

Edit: Yeah... it's a good album with probably better musicianship, but it doesn't pull me in like Dopethrone does. The lyrics and subject matter on Dopethrone combined with the atmosphere just create a post-apocalyptic Lovecraftian smorgasbord delight for me.

Truly an outstanding album. One of my all-time favourites as well. Some doom bands are releasing material of equal quality, but not with the same crushing sound. I don't think I could name one other album that achieves a similar impact with the same overwhelming force.

Sleep's Dopesmoker is one of the only doom albums that "blew me away". Maybe it's because you can't skip through tracks on it, or something else, I highly recommend you listen to it.
