Improve or improvise? If improvise, I don't see why it is necessary for a band to improvise to be talented and if you meant improve, that's just ridiculous to say metal hasn't improved since Sabbath, Purple and Uriah Heep.

I meant improvise...and I didn't mean they have to improvise to be talented, just in the context of this quote "I've hardly heard any metal bands that can improvise as well as they did." :|

And if my response seemed harsh to kelly: "I have ears and actually LISTEN to music rather than just memorizing band names to drop into a discussion. " translates to: You don't know shit. Bullshit. I've heard more than my share of hardcore punk, and I'll be damned if some snotty little kid is going to get away with that without a response.

You're the one who said that Black Flag were just one out of hundreds punk band, and that they had no talent, which are ridiculous things to say because I've hardly heard any metal bands that can improvise as well as they did. You saying anti-jazz stuff makes me realize why you don't understand them though. (Not trying to be condescending...just too lazy to word it in another way)

Again, and I mean this as politely as possible, but this type of stuff:

"I've hardly heard any metal bands that can improvise as well as they did."

as well as earlier statements you have made, shows that you don't know a lot about Metal.
I've heard BF many, many times ( I still have a few of their albums on cassette) but I always liked the UK scene more.
If I came off as too hard, I apologize.
Out of curiosity, what Metal do you listen to?

Yeah, sorry for coming off as being an arrogant cunt... It's hard to get exactly what you mean across on the internet. I just think if you listen to stuff like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=u1doq56L37w, or Greg Ginn's instrumental band Gone... it's hard to say that Black Flag didn't have talent or were just an ordinairy punk band. Also I didn't mean anything against metal in general just like, I've listened to a bunch of metal and it seems like after the 70s hardly any of the bands improvise. Maybe I'm just hearing the wrong stuff :|

Metal is a pretty diverse genre, but it is genearlly more structure oriented, true. Though there is some crazy shit out there.
I never was a big punk fan; I dig some of it and have listened to a bit of it over the years, but I am not really into it . My younger brother was into hardcore totally; funnily enough, one of the few metal bands he could stand was Venom, because they were "raw".
I do dig post-punk / deathrock quite a lot though.
Joy Division, Bauhaus, Christian Death, Sisters of Mercy, etc.
BTW, a belated welcome aboard.

So I looked up the section from Get in the Van and what Henry said seemed to be dead on unless you take all of the theatrics of metal seriously. So Venom acted over the top with their satanism and Henry made fun of it for them, comparing them to Spinal Tap. The way he claims to have beaten the shit out of some the people in that book he probably could last in a fight with Venom anyways so whatever.

On a side note, does anyone listen to Dax Riggs' (Acid Bath) solo albums?

A shitload of metal bands improvise. Metal is a huge musical genre, making blind conclusions like yours are not going to get you anywhere. Try and explore it a little deeper.
