Aye, and very good it is too.

Are you serious? I didn't know there was any such thing.

The fact that Arghoslent are judged by many solely by their lyrical theme is idiotic. The band is great, the new album is a huge step forward.

Yes, agreed. I tend not to listen to the lyrics, unless it's Pink Floyd.

The bottom line is, Arghoslent is not the greatest melodeath band, but they are the most epic sounding.

Just some quick namedropping off the top of my head.

Melodic Death Metal:
Dark Tranquillity
early In Flames
some Arch Enemy (Black Earth, Burning Bridges, Wages of Sin)
Kalmah (I guess...)
Wintersun (I guess...)

Death Metal which happens to be melodic:
God Dethroned
newer Deicide

i don't dislike Arghoslent 'cause of their lyrics, it just makes a meh band pretty lame. same with Sid Barret-less Pink Floyd

a good melodeath from this year is The Arcane Order's In The Wake of Collision. their guitarist's last band Autumn Leaves is really good too. just avoid Arcane Order's first album.

There's a difference between eschewing a band because of their ideology and passing judgment on their musical abilities because of their ideology, though.

Just so as not to derail the thread any further, more good melodeath off the top of my head:

Darkane
Dark Tranquillity
In Flames (up through Whoracle)
Soilwork (up through A Predator's Portrait)
Children of Bodom (up through Hate Crew Deathroll)
Scar Symmetry

Whinefags need to suck on a cyanide lemon. Arghoslent's lyrics are written ridiculously well, and all of the racial commentary on the new album is about as far from racist while still staying honest on the topic as I've seen. It's totally neutral. In fact, even what I read in their interviews showed their views as neutral, more of a hatred of everything than of any specific race.

Anyway, thanks to the man who suggested it in this thread. I only checked them out due to the lyrical controversy and ended up getting the only truly good melodic DM album I've heard, with great songwriting and lyrics worth learning to sing along to. Manacled Freightage and Dog and Broom just fucking slay, lyrically and musically.

Also, believe it or not, Suffocation's ST from 2006 or so is chock full of melody and great melodic leads. Not quite melodic death metal, but it surprised me and I think it sounds fantastic. Not sure what the rest of their library has, never really checked out NY BDM.

Let's just say it's not as melodic. Worth checking, though, if you liked the s/t.

Awesome band indeed. It is quite brutal though.

Yeah, it is. But that's the way I prefer my melodeath.

I don't see why more bands don't do brutal melodeath. I love brutal DM, but the lack of melody is what makes me get bored of it.

This Intense Baalism is awesome.

Well yea brutal death metal nowdays is pretty boring, i love it if it's done well and it's diverse (Suffocation, Hour of Penance, Prostitute Disfigurement, Gorgasm, Nile, Scrambled Defuncts... don't know why those came off my mind right now)...
Anyway maybe we should include not only strictly melodic death metal bands, but death metal that is melodic for the most parts...

The Chasm
Deicide (The Stench of Redemption)
Lykathea Aflame
Belphegor
Kronos

Brutality+melody

I've way too many to list. Most of my discography is of the genre...

My tops though ( And I'm lumping some in )

In Flames
The Duskfall
Scar Symmetry
Hypocrisy
Insomnium
Amon Amarth
Soulscar
Arsis
Zonaria
Soilwork up until FNF
Kalmah
The Abscence

I know I'm missing a lot and I love a lot of melodic metalcore like Naeara, but I'll spare embarassing myself with mention of more bands. I'll probably note more later.

Visceral Evisceration is another good one. They're not exactly brutal, but they're far doomier than other melodeath bands. And they've got gory lyrics ala Cannibal Corpse.

A short-lived, but gloriously retarded band. Worth checking out.
