The "classical" section of "Neath Waters" by Thy Catafalque and the acoustic bit of "As Embers Dress the Sky" by Agalloch. Actually, I think all of both of those songs could qualify, but if we're going for sections, then I'd pick those.

Holy shit dude, Neath Waters is such a great pick. Probably my favorite song ever.

Anyone else, do yourself a favor and listen to it now, seriously.

I went and listened to it and was absolutely BLOWN AWAY. I can't believe I had it on my iPod and didn't know it was such an awesome song...maybe one of my favorites ever, now that I've heard it. Anyways, now I'm listening to that whole CD and it's just as great. Wish more techno-type stuff was like this.

Yeah, that whole album is pretty kickass. I found out about/obtained it from this website, actually, which is fortunate, because I don't believe I would have found out about it any other way.

Very much so. It loses a bit of momentum after Kék ég Karaván, but reestablishes itself with Az Ősanya Szól Ivadékaihoz. Still, the first four songs equal around 40 minutes of pure intensity. :dio:

A little more than two minutes of pure musical perfection. Best solo ever.

+1

That is a magnificent song. In fact, it's probably my favorite Iron Maiden song. :dio:

Dream Theater comes to mind immediately for me. I would have to nominate:

Learning To Live and Metropolis Part 1.

Both of those songs are incredible.

Hell yes, the outro to Learning To Live is beautiful.

Specifically, the big huge climb in the middle of Metropolis. And you are having how many frets now? :omfg:

I'm gonna put Subway to Sally's "Die Rose im Wasser" forward, I never get tired of that song, or the album as a whole.

Oliver Messiaen - quartet for the end of time

Messiaen had been captured by the German army during World War II and was being held as a prisoner of war. Finding a clarinetist (Henri Akoka), a violinist (Jean le Boulaire), and a cellist (Étienne Pasquier) among his fellow prisoners, he wrote a short trio for them, which they played for him in the lavatory. Before this, however, while in transit to the camp, Messiaen had shown Akoka sketches for what would become the clarinet solo. He later wrote the Quatuor for the same trio, plus himself at the piano. This combination of instruments is unusual, but not without precedent: Walter Rabl had composed for it in 1896, as had Paul Hindemith in 1938. The Quartet was premiered in Stalag VIII-A in Görlitz, Germany (currently Zgorzelec, Poland) on January 15, 1941, allegedly to an audience of 5,000 fellow prisoners of war and prison guards, though there is reason to suspect that the audience may in fact have been much smaller. Messiaen later recalled the occasion: "Never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension." (Stevenson 2005:843)

Knowing how and when it was written, also that it was inspired by the Book of Revelations, makes it even more powerful than it already is.

Also it's the only classical piece I have heard Jeff listen to. :P.

i usually hate big build-ups but i really like the one in Neath Waters. great song, indeed.

Protest The Hero - the first two minutes in "Blindfolds Aside", especially the first vocal bit (from "we woke up as men" to "the steel..."), i've never heard vocals delivered like that and it works perfectly.
PTH's "Bone Marrow" is also amazing in the first minute.

The solos near the end of "The Glass Prison" by Dream Theater are all jaw dropping.

there's more, but these are the ones that get me off the top of my head.

The bridge before the final chorus in Blind Guardian's Mirror Mirror.

"Even though
The storm calmed down
The bitter end
Is just a matter of time
Shall we dare the dragon
Merciless he's poisoning our hearts
Our hearts
How shall we leave the lost road
Time's getting short so follow me
A leader's task so clearly
To find a path out of the dark"

The ending to Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen.

"There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win"

Oh and my favourite hiphop song Respiration also has my favourite verse, by Mos Def. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHReQQnMVQo

Also, the entire solo to that song is just breathtaking.

I'd never been part of an audience that sang along to a guitar solo 'til I saw Guardian in Dublin.

Burzum - Jesu Død

The first few minutes are absolutely breathtaking. When the drums set in time just stands still for a few seconds.
