Actually, quite a bit.

Saying Black Flag is more important than Venom is ridiculous; Black Flag was one out of hundreds of punk bands, and there were many punk bands that were way better than Black Flag. Discharge comes to mind, as does UK Subs, Rudimentary Peni, Crass, Raw Power, GBH and a dozen others I could easily roll off. Venom changed metal forever.
And Blag Flag criticizing any other band over musical ability is hilarious.

What??? Black Flag, especially Greg Ginn, are great musicians. I know this because I have ears and actually LISTEN to music rather than just memorizing band names to drop into a discussion. Black Flag came before, and are better known, than any of those bands (I do like Discharge more though :) ). It's just silly to say that they aren't THE hardcore punk band, no matter how many obscurities you can namedrop.

If they are great musicains, they certainly choose to hide it.
Sound like a bunch of Tourettes-stricken spasmoids, especially pre-Rollins... hell the Circle Jerks did it better.
I've heard enough punk to know what's good and what isn't...Black Flag is to punk what Metallica is to metal.
Being more well-known doesn't equal better, you know.
Memorizing names and namedropping? You arrogant little cunt, I've been listening to punk / Metal since before you were even born, so stfu.
METAL>>>>> punk, any fucking day of the week. Period.

STFU Bansheeman...
Who's got the bigger one? Who plays faster? Who has better technical skill? Who the fuck cares about that stuff? You're an idiot, period.
Music is all about what you feel playing it, listening to it, living it... The way you talk about it, there's more feeling in Greg Ginn toenail than there'll ever be in your whole body.

Still a fake buddhist, I see... you're a joke, froggy, you know that?

Oooohhh, Resist the NWO, how EDGY.
Tool.

How clever!
FYI, I was attacking you on what you wrote, not on what you (think) you are...
Then, unable to answer my point you make personal attacks... Do you know how small it makes you look? No, even smaller!

Quoth the frenchman: "You're an idiot, period."

You rated Styx - The Grand Illusion higher than Welcome To Hell. 'Nuff said. You think you know everything about music because you listen to a lot of fruity jazz, get over yourself. This is a METAL forum.
You should just keep out of my posts,eh, monsieur.

As for Black Flag, yeah they basically started the whole LA hardcore scene, but their musical acuity is not "great". Period.
And there are (or were)way better bands out there.

And if my response seemed harsh to kelly: "I have ears and actually LISTEN to music rather than just memorizing band names to drop into a discussion. " translates to: You don't know shit. Bullshit. I've heard more than my share of hardcore punk, and I'll be damned if some snotty little kid is going to get away with that without a response.

Now: Fuck off poseur.

Wow what a shitstorm. Without getting into the emotional aspect of Black Flag or what they attempted to portray, what about the Rollins Band? Those were some swell albums. Not all classics (maybe Weight) but there were some great songs.

Edit: Looking back, I wasn't going to defend Black Flag and then I started listening to My War. That album is so different than a lot of other punk bands from the time (afraid to use the word revolutionary) it deserves iconic status. That album wasn't typical teenage angst; it was raw, mature, (possibly be considered) existential angst that actually showed depth unlike the other bands who were excited about anarchy and horror movies. They weren't virtuosos and didn't display any technicality but for a punk band they weren't one layered. I'd go as far as to say that album creates the same dark atmosphere which many black metal bands do but instead of just portraying pain and melancholy; it portrays a vast range of emotions from paranoia to existential depression to guilt.

I have My War, Damaged and Slip It In. Maybe they don't suck ass (I'll give them some credit) but still, they were never my fav hardcore band.
Still... Venom >>> Blag Flag.

Missed this debate, but I would have swiftly ended it with:

"Teacher caught me masturbating, underneath the desk"

It's just out of Black Flag's league however good they where.

You're the one who said that Black Flag were just one out of hundreds punk band, and that they had no talent, which are ridiculous things to say because I've hardly heard any metal bands that can improvise as well as they did. Define fruity jazz.

He could just as easily say you don't understand Venom. They are a simplistic band but that doesn't mean you can grasp what they are about easily. It took me a long time to get into Venom, even after I'd been listening to more extreme types of metal. I just thought they sounded amateurish and kind of lightweight. It's only later you realise the spirit they have and how they are the absolute embodiment of metalness.

And yes, they are pretty monumentally important. Sure Black Flag were influential, but in terms of one band alone having such a huge effect Venom were way ahead of them. BF were part of a scene, Venom were unique, and trailblazers even though the mainstream pretty much took the piss out of them. Now because real metal is still just as untrendy as it ever was, Venom have thankfully avoided some kind of ironic "reassessment" and are still as fierce as ever.

I'll give you that one; BF was quite influential (in the punk scene), when I said that, I basically meant that musically, they were one of hundreds. And I've always preferred other acts; BF always came off as sloppy as hell, even for hardcore.

And , no I am not interested in jazz, sorry.

Sounds like the comeback of WinterIsComing to me... Another no-life that just enjoys flaming so much he does that all the time...

Define fruity jazz.

Styx>Venom, period.

Black Flag>Venom (and that includes musical skills).

Just shut up already.
If you are going to fling insults, expect them to be reciprocated.

Like I said you think STYX... STYX! > Venom.
Lame.
And by the way, miss-sewer, I haven't flamed anybody here, but if you are goung push your weight around with me, you know I'll push back.
Begone, pest.

Remember when we used to get giant quote boxes? Aaaah, the days.

Miss-sewer stefan says things like:

"STFU Bansheeman...

Music is all about what you feel playing it, listening to it, living it... The way you talk about it, there's more feeling in Greg Ginn toenail than there'll ever be in your whole body."

And expects no response? And accuses me of flaming?
What an asshole. Seriously.

Honestly, I wouldn't consider Venom an amazing band just innovative because they were so damn different.

You're right; They are the first to admit they are not exactly musically adept. What they do have is an intense attitude of "fuck it; this is what we are, and if you like it, cool, if not fuck off."
Plus they make up in heart what they lack in musical ability.
Venom are Venom; a very unique band in the annals of Metal.

Calling someone an 'arrogant little cunt' isn't flaming? Good to know... I love that I come back to this.

As far as the discussion goes, they're both good bands, a bit masochistic to pick the better imho.

Yeah, it was a bit harsh, I'll admit, but her whole "namedropping" and "you don't know shit" tone was arrogant.
And besides, that was between her and I, not stefan, who as always, has to poke his nose into my business.
He should know better than to push his weight around with me.

You're the one who said that Black Flag were just one out of hundreds punk band, and that they had no talent, which are ridiculous things to say because I've hardly heard any metal bands that can improvise as well as they did. You saying anti-jazz stuff makes me realize why you don't understand them though. (Not trying to be condescending...just too lazy to word it in another way)

Again, and I mean this as politely as possible, but this type of stuff:

"I've hardly heard any metal bands that can improvise as well as they did."

as well as earlier statements you have made, shows that you don't know a lot about Metal.
I've heard BF many, many times ( I still have a few of their albums on cassette) but I always liked the UK scene more.
If I came off as too hard, I apologize.
Out of curiosity, what Metal do you listen to?

V, it's the internet, not a local bar. Try and remember that, hm?

Yeah, sorry for coming off as being an arrogant cunt... It's hard to get exactly what you mean across on the internet. I just think if you listen to stuff like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=u1doq56L37w, or Greg Ginn's instrumental band Gone... it's hard to say that Black Flag didn't have talent or were just an ordinairy punk band. Also I didn't mean anything against metal in general just like, I've listened to a bunch of metal and it seems like after the 70s hardly any of the bands improvise. Maybe I'm just hearing the wrong stuff :|
