I never really liked In Flames but I liked the samples I heard for this album. I guess I'll have to check it out.

Edit: Yeah, In Flames still sounds uninspired to me after listening to the new one. I thought it would be different but it wasn't. I've never liked anything that they've done including Whoracle and Jester Race.

What's with all the AtG hate? They didn't have the length of career that the others have, but then the Haunted are still around and carrying on the style of SotS fairly consistently.

The Dead Eye = Slaughter Of The Soul?!

Haven't heard The Dead Eye but the earlier Haunted albums definitely continue the SotS style of mainstream but heavy melodeath pretty convincingly. And I said "fairly consistently", not "in an awesome manner".

The new samples sound very good. As one poster pointed out, it looks like In Flames has finally established the sound they've been aiming for already since Colony (which, if you really think about it, is REALLY the album where the "nu" In Flames sound began).

This sounds like it will definitely be better than the rather bland Come Clarity (if you want to know the actual fact, I liked Soundtrack To Your Escape more than Come Clarity).

Wow. Am I dreaming, or is this the best thing the band has made since Colony? I can't thing of a good word to describe something that is capable of stepping both backwards and forwards at the same time, in the best possible ways of each, but rest assured I would be using it to describe A Sense of Purpose if I could.

It almost makes me feel kind of guilty for not waiting for the official release date. Almost .

I've been reading this kind of response on the album at a few sites now. WTF? This album is basically NO DIFFERENT than Reroute To Remain, Soundtrack To Your Escape, or Come Clarity. When Reroute... came out, people were like: "What the fuck? Well, it's different...but I guess it's not that bad." And then when Soundtrack... came out, people were like: "Fuck this! More of this shit? This album is fucking gay! Fuck this nu-metal bullshit!" And then when Come Clarity came out, people were like: "Guess they're not changing back, huh? Well, I guess this is decent." And now it's like people have just gotten used to this sound so they're like: "Fuck yeah! This is their BEST album in years! It's old school...some."

Pffft! The last four albums have generally been exactly the same; but this new album is the most melodic album the band has ever done! Come Clarity is the only album out of the last four that had a bigger dose of that straight up old school melodeath style. This album is not channeling that melodic death metal style of old like Come Clarity did. A few songs like "Sober And Irrelevant" and "March To The Shore" definitely have elements of it, but there's surely no nod to the old school at all here. And like I said, it's largely the same style of the last three.

With that said, it's a great album. In Flames found a niche after Clayman, and I don't think they're moving any time soon.

I liked Reroute To Remain and Come Clarity, STYE a bit less, but I don't dislike it. As far as I can tell it's not nu-metal, as it isn't bad music.

Well obviously I can only speak for myself, but that's simply not how I view the progression at all. I'm sure that's mostly due to the fact that I hopped onto the In Flames fan-ship with Come Clarity and worked backwards from there, as opposed to standing by every single release since the beginning. Nevertheless, I have listened to each one many, many times, and have noticed massive differences with each. After having heard A Sense of Purpose I really do think it, too, stands apart from their other works, but is also the overall best album they've produced since 2000.

Yes, the core style is the largely same, but, as with all their albums, the subtle changes and tweaks really make a huge impact. Unlike many, I came to eventually accept R2R and STYE, but I couldn't help but feel that were too many missed oppurtunities, and while I absolutely loved CC I ultimately found it too cold and calculated in contrast to the band's generally upbeat nature; on ASoP, they stick to their chosen path while simaltaneously fixing these percieved flaws. Besides, no one can ignore the existence of its "The Chosen Pessimist", which is truly unqiue from everything else the band has ever done.

Also: no nod to the old school? Really? Hell, I thought that the acoustic midsection of "Alias" sounded like it could've come straight from Lunar Strain! I know CC already had recieved the "old-school meets new-school" label when it came out (or at least, that's what the band said about it), but ASoP definitely deserves that title more.

Sorry for the ramble .

I feel there are plenty of classic In Flames moments on it, but yeah I wouldn't say they've ventured too out since they " rerouted " to remain so to speak. This album has a Come Clarity feel but with many more of what I guess I call classic IF moments of melody and I do get a strange sense of Colony era moments on some songs on the album.

I wouldn't say this album is a huge progression or anything but I think it's different enough to be a piece you can pick apart from Reroute, Soundtrack, and Come Clarity personally. I think In Flames has always been on the right track, and are always seeming to be working on perfecting whatever they're doing at the time musically and I'll say this album is definitely their best since Reroute to Remain ( Which is my favorite IF album ).

I say this as an 8 year In Flames fan who have been arguing against the TJR or die people for years. I love all their material equally.

But yes. This is an amazing album. Go buy it if you're even remotely into In Flames or melodic death ( Unless you think that ATG is the only good melodeath band ). I'm very pleased with it and I think others will be as well.

Can't wait to hear this material live in May.

I'm eagerly anticipating the new In Flames.

It's been a band I've loved since I got into metal (which was . . . like 5 months ago) and although "Come Clarity"'s sound bordered from melodic death to nu-metal, I'm faithful in their new release. After some sampling, I'm more confident they'll deliver another solid album.

Though, okay, I loved "Reroute to Remain" *dodges tomato*.

Come on! "Trigger" rocks.

I really cannot see how the new In Flames could in any possible way compete with the new Arsis.

Is "We Are The Nightmare" that good? I've only heard great things about it, but I'm not that familiar with the band. How is it?

Has it leaked or is it already out?

EDIT: I just listened to the title track on YouTube and it does indeed kick ass. I'll see if I can find more of this band.

It can't. The new Arsis is in a league all its own. The hardcore kids are just going bonkers, as usual.

Not to mention the new Arsis is really damn good even for their standards.

Def a step forward over United In Regret. Still a celebration of guilt remains untouched.

By the way they both (In Flames and Arsis) had a bunch of songs posted on their myspace from their new albums.

Arsis will own every album put out this year.

I love Arsis and the album is great but personally I like the new IF more and will probably enjoy the new Scar Symmetry more as well.

Oh yeah, In Flames is at Sokol above on May 8th, Ness... Can't remember if I mentioned that before or not.

I actually PMed you, but yeah I'm going. Me and a couple of friends.

Do you think it'll sell out?

lol if it's anything like Soilwork and Darkest Hour at the Underground I highly doubt it.

I think it's gonna be poorly promoted and probably not be very full at all. I wouldn't worry about it selling out but get your tickets in advance anyway.
