I hope I didn't imply that all BM fans are fine with church-burnings! That would be highly ignorant of me, especially considering I personally know a couple of BM supporters who are about as harmless as newborn kittens.
But even after I thought about it, I decided that no other metal fanbase has any real equivalent (at least, not any that I can think of) to the atrocious actions that those BM fans committed, however small in number and however long ago. That's what earned them my vote in the end.
As for the less psychotic, more common flavor of black metalheads?...well, you know those harmless BMers I mentioned above? One of them likes to pretend to cringe or vomit every time someone mentions "Jesus" or "the bible" or, quite frankly, anything remotely related to Christianty. I happen to have a huge issue with people who make others uncomfortable in what they believe, and I'm getting the feeling that a great number of other BM fans are like this. Not cool, IMO.
You mean you haven't heard of the infamous Groove Metal Flayings?
I'd have though the fact that a few Black Metal
BAND MEMBERS killed people was slightly more serious than torching a few churches. And I suspect that you haven't listened to much Black Metal, hence this view of it as some horrific cult rather than the hilarious yet sometimes rather nice and atmospheric type of music that the rest of us see it as.
Horrific cult? Did I really make it sound like that?
You're right in that I don't really listen to much black metal, but I am aware that many bands (perhaps, a majority of them) are not meant to be taken seriously. That doesn't mean the fans are bound to take it as such, even if a majority of them do. Whether the bands they worship are nice guys or a bunch of whackjobs, it doesn't excuse the actions of the fans either way when a couple of them decide to go burn a church.
I'll agree without question, however, that as far as black metal goes there have been far worse events on the "bands" side than the "fans" side. People like, say, Varg Vikernes aren't too common in the music industry.
