Dream Theater have a best of out in April if anyone's interested. It has an awful tracklisting though, and about half the songs have been cut down.

Disc 1 (The Dark Side):

01. Pull Me Under (2007 Remix)
02. Take The Time (2007 Remix)
03. Lie (Single Edit)
04. Peruvian Skies
05. Home (Single Edit)
06. Misunderstood (Single Edit)
07. The Test That Stumped Them All
08. As I Am
09. Endless Sacrifice
10. The Root Of All Evil
11. Sacrificed Sons

Disc 2 (The Light Side):

01. Another Day (2007 Remix)
02. To Live Forever
03. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
04. The Silent Man
05. Hollow Years
06. Through Her Eyes (Alternate Album Mix)
07. The Spirit Carries On
08. Solitary Shell (Single Edit)
09. I Walk Beside You
10. The Answer Lies Within
11. Disappear

Maybe the remixes will be good and unedited. Misunderstood needs to be edited.

Looking at the lack of anything off Systematic Chaos, it seems like a cash grab by their old label. And four songs off 6 degrees, their weakest release?

That is what Mike Portnoy says at least.

Wow, that's a really terrible tracklist. Personally I love Six Degrees, but this is ridiculous, I mean 'I Walk Beside You' on a Best Of? Wow, it's one of their worst songs ever.

Theocracy - Mirror of Souls \,,/
Pyramaze - Immortal \,,/
Keldian - Journey of Souls \,,/ (lots of souls flying around these days)

Wow that sucked pretty bad. Under a glass moon, metropolis, panic attack? there is so much that should have been there. And they can't put bits and pieces from the six degrees of inner turbulence song on there. that is stupid. And the two songs from Octavarium is the two worst from the album. Bah and Portnoy says he is actually embarrased about the whole Falling into infinity album. Why didn't they put new millenium and hells kitchen, which is the two best tracks from the album (IMO) there? Not buying this.

You think SA will be able to release something by the end of 2008? I wanna hear how Viljanen works in new material.

I thought Lines In The Sand was the best song on FII, but that's just my opinion. I actually rather like Hollow Years. As I said, I don't think the track choice had anything to do with the band, seems more like a chance by their old label to capitalize seeing as they seem to be having a commercial renaissance as of late.

yeah i see your point... Three should be included a live version of Hollow Years, as Petrucci's solo is just orgasmic.

Yeah that would be awesome.

Bernd Aufermann is back but Frank Banx and - crucially - Dirk Thurisch are gone. I don't hold out much hope.

I'm waiting on Wintersun and whatever the hell Devin decides to release this year.

Typical bloody metalheads. I could post Elisha Cuthbert's phone number here and you'd still all be whining about the tracklisting on a Dream Theater best-of!

Isn't there only like three radio edits? And cutting down songs is what a prog band needs to do, else you'd have a double CD with 10 songs on them combined.

Quite a few if you count the 6 Degrees bits. I guess I just really hate cut down songs. Still, if it gets more people into their music then more power to them.

Guys, don't make the mistake of thinking the band has any control over these situations. They don't have any choice. These compilations are going to happen because the band does not own the rights to thier songs in most cases. That is the actual studio recording of the song and it's masters. The label can do what it wishes. The publishing is different. They will make royalties as always, but with bands like Rush that do own all their publishing, it just means the record companies stand to make a bit less and just profit from the manufactre and sale of the disc itself rather than the rights.

In the end, bands can't do anything about it, but, they stand to profit heartily from it anyway. They are in the position of profitting from something against their wishes if they don't want compilations released. Itr makes them look bad, but the fact is that they have no option.

They are always encouraged to add their input on titles, tracklisting, ect. to make it come across as an endorsement, but generally most bands agree to help out just so the best version of a product that is going to market gets issued. In essence when you sign a record deal you're signing away the right to use your own songs the way you wish.

Good point. A good example would be the Iced Earth double CD best of album, The Blessed And The Damned. It consists of hand picked songs from the first two albums, then simply the first 3/4 songs from all of the others. Pretty shocking to think how little thought there is behind the process sometimes.

I'd rather listen to Slayer tbh.
