Quite frankly, I like this album. Yeah, it's not really a Testament album, but I think they did the whole Death Metal thing quite well (note: This may very well be the only time a thrash metal band has ever released a real death metal album). The album also has this naturally punishing, chilling atmosphere to it that I really like. It actually SOUNDS demonic, and without the "kill your mother/burn virgins/drink the blood of the innocent" lyrics you'd normally associate with such a brutal album. In other words, there's really no other metal album quite like it.

Demonic Refusal and Hatred's Rise are two of the best songs Testament has ever done IMO. Murky Waters, The Burning Times (love that solo in the middle), Together As One, Jun-Jun, John Doe and even Nostrovia (possibly the heaviest "joke song" ever written) are also excellent tunes.

A hit for me as well. I don't think Testament have a bad album in their discography. They have the skills required to do this extreme form of music (Chuck Billy, Peterson, Nick fucking Barker!!!) well and I wouldn't mind hearing another one like this.

I like it, but I have to admit the songwriting here is rather weak. I do enjoy the album while it's playing, but for some reason it never leaves a lasting impression on me. There's no real standout tracks. I also prefer the approach taken on Low and the Gathering to Demonic. It's a solid album for sure, but unremarkable in the end.

A miss overall. It's a decent album, but it seems like it's only enjoyable like 10% of the time I try and listen to it. I generally find it kind of boring, though I don't think it's a terrible album. It's just far below their best.

"Hatreds Rise" is a killer song, though. Of course, that's the only song like their other material.

Interestingly, I found out in some interviews with Chuck Billy that he actually doesn't like death metal or black metal very much. And Demonic shaped up the way it did largely under Eric Peterson's direction. For example, Demonic Refusal was originally supposed to have clean verses and a growly chorus. But Eric Peterson, after hearing Chuck do the growling chorus during rehearsal, was like "You should do that throughout the entire song!" And, thus, Demonic Refusal was shaped into a slow but heavy death metal song.

Hit for me. My first Testament album. Good stuff. I would give it a 75/100.

For some reason, I've never heard this album by them. One of my favorite bands, not a bad album by them (From what I've heard anyhow). The Gathering is my favorite at this point from them and one of my favorite records from just about any band.

I'll have to check out this album though, I like the sound of it since I love Dragonlord and Chuck Billy when he gets brutal.

Testament actually used to sell it on their website for only $6.66 (get it?). They may still sell it there for the same price.

From what I've read on this thread so far, I recknon it's a great album. Testament has always been one of the non-disappointing thrash bands in thrash history. The Gathering is my all time favourite, and when I heard Nick fuckin Barker was recruited to thrash the kits, I knew it was gonna be a 'The Gathering Part II'.

I haven't heard the album yet but since you guys mentioned it's death metal, there's every reason to buy it now.
