After listening to 'Summon The Antichrist' on their Myspace page, I can honestly say there is something up with the production. However, it does not detract from the listening experience in the least bit. Actually, I think it makes things more interesting to the ears. It's probably just me though.

I'll be getting this, fosho.

The rest of the album has pretty damn near perfect production. I can see why people would criticise Summon The Antichrist - listening again, it sounds fine to me in terms of production, barely any fogginess, instruments all coming through clear (listen to the bit when the clean vox come in - nothing fuzzy about that) maybe it's an MP3 sound quality thing.

Great av, btw.

This is probably my pick for album of the year. It's varied but still heavy. From the softness of the song "the dark inside", the clean vocals and guttural vocals in each song and not to mention the fun drum interlude allows mean to continue playing this album after I first listened to it. The production quality was really bothering at first but it kind of fades away as the album progresses and the more you listen to it.

Definitely worth the $11 it costs on half.com or whatever it would cost you. Go buy it or steal it whatever. just get it and listen to it.

There's a link on the band's website to an interesting interview they did on Bruce Dickinson's radio show. You can also hear the songs "Axiom" "The Promise" and "The Dark Inside" on it.

Seems that I found this different than most people here. I honestly didnt like this much. Ive listened to it a few times but I cant seem to get into it. Id give it a 70/100 at most. Dont get me wrong I usually like this kind of music, but I dont see them as anything special.

Great review Zad :)

Just picked this one up today, listened a couple of times, am absolutely in love haha.

"The Dark Inside" is freaking amazing!

As for production, theres nothing wrong with it. I can hear every instrument fine. The production issues must be related to shitty mp3 quality samples.

Great! Check their earlier albums out as well, much to like.

I just bought this today. Sounds like it's quite deep, and worth repeated listens for sure.

I really enjoyed it after listening to it a couple times, just have been busy with other music to listen to it more than that. But I can guarantee I will.

As an engineer, I can tell you the production was a conscious choice to limit the sonic capability because it made the song "summon the antichrist" sound darker, more focused and more brutal. It worked very well.

I don't know, it seems like a small step-back from Words That go Unspoken...., but I can't quite put my finger on it. It is still quality Death Metal with sprinklings of Black, but it doesn't seem quite as technical as Words. That being said, I have been listening to it since Saturday, and it's quite addicting. The riffs drip from the CD itself, and man, Jason Mendonca is awesome. Being able to do three completely different styles of vocals, and increasing the quality of them on each album is really impressive. My favorite songs are Summon the Antichrist, The Dark Inside, and Footstep Resound in the Empty Chapel. Also love the Eastern inluences. This band puts out top-notch stuff again and again. Certainly one of my favorites to ever come out of the Death Metal genre.

A bit strange to post a reply after four years, but I feel like doing it so...
I am scandinavian, familiar with black and death metal. Honestly I did not know there was an english band playing this genre. I read the review of Opeths Heritage and in the forum afterwards some said that they prefered Akercocke instead of Opeths new direction towards the seventies style of music. I then bought the last three Akercocke albums to decide for myself. You know the picture.

After listening to Choronzon and Words...... I concluded that this is a great band, but I think Opeth is better.

I have now read the review on Antichrist, and it makes me stop and think. Goat is writing it with love for the band. I respect that and therefore I will not jump to conclusions. I will play Antichrist five times and then be back to state my opinion.

You didn't know about English bands playing death metal with black metal influences or just any English bands playing death metal and black metal at all?

I love Akercocke and think that Opeth may do progressive metal better but they can't touch Akercocke in terms of brutality. The tinges of black metal and the brutal death metal make Akercocke much more enjoyable for me. Personal preference.

This album has become one of my all-time favourites. Of course I have re-listen to everything they have but this album has gotten a lot of playtime.

I didn't like it quite as much Words Go Unspoken when it was released, so I probably liked it less than I should have. This album has aged well.
