Quote:
As many already know, our guitarist Jani Liimatainen has been absent from the line-up this spring and summer. The reason was his messing around with his compulsory military/civil/prison duty, or rather, complete failure to take care of it.

This matter, and everything that goes with it, caused a split between Jani and the other band members. This split was impossible to mend without Jani's help and co-operation.

Therefore we would like to make known the following: During fall of '06 and spring of '07, Jani's personal matters and actions drove us to a situation where we had no option but to ask Jani to leave the band.

Jani was notified of this in May, and the separation was amicable. We wanted to give Jani the chance to get his life together before making this public, which is why we didn't make this announcement earlier. We wish Jani well on his chosen path.

"Show must go on", so, facing the facts, we hereby humbly announce that Elias Viljanen is from this day forward a full and official member of Sonata Arctica.Throughout this summer, on many occasions, Elias has shown himself to be able to fill the big boots Jani left behind.

We hope our friends and our fans understand that this was the only choice left for us to make so that our band could continue. Sonata Arctica has always been, and always will be, more than the sum of its parts. The band has become for us a way of life, a lifeline that simply can not be cut off.

A long "Unia" -tour lies in front of us. We extend Elias a warm welcome to the Sonata family, and we hope the fans will, too. Sonata Arctica is whole again.

That's a stupid reason to kick somebody out of a band imo. I hope Jani returns after he sorts out this military duty thing.

If this guy wont sort out this himself very soon he will find the police knocking on his door and escorting him to jail where he has to stay for 6 months. Even if he would get a hold of himself and go to the military it would be quite impossible for SA to play the gigs. Oh well, they could of course used Elias as an only temporary replacement. If he would have choosen to do the 13 months civil duty he would only be forced to work for the government for 8 hours per day and would have time over for SA. I can not understand why somebody could be this ignorant and not take care of such small thing even though the other members made clear his future carrier in one of finland's biggest metalbands is at stake.

Maybe Liimatainen finds the military duty as unfair and wants to make some kind of political statement by refusing and going to jail? I do not, however, think this is the case since I think he would have made such a statement long ago to get as publicity as possible.

To me this news changes little. Jani wasn't such a great guitar player so that he can't be replaced. Maybe the new guy can do a better job. You know few people are irreplaceable and Jani didn't stand out that much. And don't be so quick to judge this Elias guy, I haven't even heard him playing yet.

Hopefully he'll go on to form a band playing more in the vein of SA's first three releases.

I never ended liking the new keyboard player, he looks...how to but it nicely....he looks like he doesn't belong on stage with his creepy weirdo looks. Now Jani leaves... doesn't sound good but I'm glad for him cause they barely gave him guitar work worth his talent. All the solos were given to creepy keyboard dude, and that can't compare to a real guitar solo. Like somebody else mentioned hope he goes and forms a new band with solos that are as wicked as black sheep.

Well Elias has been called the Steve Vai of Finland so I wouldn't be too quick to judge him. In fact I've been wanting to see them live with him playing very much and this might be very good news although I really like Liimatainen's solos and playing as well.

Hmmm... more of a reason not to like newer Sonata, however I have not heard the new guy yet. We shall see.

After hearing their turd of an album "Unia""....i dont see how replacing Jani would make them worse than they are right now. Anyway I heard great things about Elias Viljanen in terms of how good he is technically, but I dont know how creative he is.

At first I thought Jani had just opted out due to him being so marginalised on the new album, but it looks like he has in fact just been a total idiot. Hmm.

I just hope Unia was a one off and the return to form with the next release doing what they do best. Jani's did a great job when they let him I wonder what he thinks of Unia?
