This is one of the two BG albums I own, and people seem to have mixed opinions of it. What's the overall consensus?

I think it's a Hit. It's certainly a difficult album, and the songs have so much going on in them that it's difficult to really remember them unless you listen to the album how many times. Nevertheless, it has some excellent musicianship and probably more passion than any Power Metal album I've ever heard. A Twist In The Myth is better IMO, but this is certainly a keeper.

Huge hit, not really a bad song on the album. Its also in my top 5 favorite albums of all time and definately my favorite BG album.

I can't really decide, when it first came out I was disappointed. A few weeks later I loved it and thought it was the best thing they had ever done! Some months later I started to think that atleast Imaginations and Nightfall were better albums, eventually I started to think that it was their worst. Me not liking the album lasted for years, then I started to think it was okay, a very impressive production but most songs are mediocre, masked in layer upon layer of music.

Me voting now wouldn't be fair, since I don't like Blind Guardian at all these days. BG was my favorite band at one point, so my relationship with the band is pretty much like my relationship with that album. I used to love them but now I can't stand them.

Sorry to go a little off topic but which album is the best place to start with BG? I've been meaning to get into them for quite some time now.

Ditto. Pretty much the album that got me into Power Metal.

I actually started with this one, but really any album is a good place to start. It just depends on which Blind Guardian you're in the mood for. There are two completley different Blind Guardians.

You know what go for one in the middle, Imaginations From the Other Side. That's my suggestion.

Quite a big miss by BG standards. "And Then There Was Silence" is one of the best metal songs ever, and "Battlefield" and The Soulforged" are also very good, but the rest ranges from pretty good to "what a fucking mess!". They tried to put ideas for 3 albums into this one and it just doesn't work all the time.

I still think every song on this album is next to perfect. "And Then There Was Silence" is damn amazing. It still gives me chills.

And Then There Was Silence= Top 5 song. I can't think of another song that affects me as emotionally.

The rest of the album= fucking awesome. My only complaints are Maiden and the Minstrel Knight, which is cheesy and shit, save for some cool guitar somewhere in the middle, and Punishment Divine, which worked a lot better live as a guitar oriented song.

Hit.

This album is so symphonic, bombastic, epic, melodic, and amazing. <3

I agree too. I wouldn't call it a big miss though, it's an ok album, but it's definitely a drop in quality after the amazing IFTOS and NIME. But I agree with the description of the album. I'd add Precious Jerusalem to the "very good" list too.

I hadn't listened to BG for year, I dug up Imaginations the other day and it's awesome. ANATO was ok too, I guess.

It's weird how you can love a band, them hate them for years and find them unlistenable, then fall back in love again.
