Somebody should forward that picture to Roadrunner! It's a little late to get it into the magazines, but they could use it on a television ad and maybe buy some large billboard signs...

It personally makes very little sense to me how Slipknot sells a few million records. Opeth should sell just about as many records as Slipknot does, in my opinion -- neither really being that much of a commercial prospect.

Yeah, peirre wieburg or some shit, he officially is in the band now.

Anyway, I finally got to listening...only once through so far but it was just...eh. I can't say I'm frightfully disapointed since I didn't like the song I heard in preview anyway, but oddly enough that one ended up providing some of the few cool moments. A completely underwhelming album, no real standout track for me. The riffs are just...bland, like most of the clean vocals. The beautiful melodies are gone, and the band simply churns out stop-start riffing among some very familiar chords and chord patterns. Not a terrible album by any means, after all it wasn't offensively bad or anything, but maybe something like a 50.

Being formerly a huge fan of the band I really want this album to grab me, but as of yet it's the worst I've heard. Maybe it will impress me more with repeated listens, but it doesn't seem very likely.

It makes perfect sense to me. If anything, good music in inversely related to popularity. There are always exceptions, but it often rings true.

Slipknot just happened to hit at the right time, and people ate it up. Opeth has no place in the mainstream of the 90s or early 2000s even. But I can see them making some headway with the metalcore pulse-riffage on this album and the current resurgence of harsher (if still often shitty) music.

I'll have to agree with your analysis. Personally, I think Slipknot suck, and if you asked, most people would agree. Even some of the people who bought their album. Some of them probably thought it was the "in" thing and ended up buying something they really didn't enjoy listening to. They were like the biggest "fuck you" to parents nu-metal could deliver at the time...

It's almost the same thing with Nine Inch Nails years ago with The Downward Spiral. There are NOT millions of people who actually LIKE the music on that album. Trent Reznor is either brilliant or the luckiest S.O.B. to con so many idiots into buying his CDs.

IMO Morningrise is their best album... Dunno why but their nonstop theme shifts are sweet... Not like their later albums where they use 3 riffing themes for a 12min song...

morningrise sure slays some dragons...

my favorite is either still life or ghost reveries. BWP is not far behind either.

I completely agree, incredible album, this is a band which actually deserve to be popular, unlike the tripe that Metal Hammer keeps putting on the front of its cover.

Nice album. Not much of a progression, but more so than Dream Theater's newest release. Overrated, but underrated all the same.

And the Grand Conjuration kicks some major ass. Whoever says otherwise is a dickbutt.

I also agree, incredible song. Probably the 2nd or so extreme metal song I ever heard. It's just so damn cool when his voice is clean and calm and then the growling bit comes in - kick ass.

I love this album. I really don't get why everyone bashes it. It's my favorite Opeth album actually.

Mine too. With Deliverance coming a very close second.

No way is this anywhere near the best Opeth, I'd probably even say I prefer Deliverance and Damnation. Quite possibly my least favourite, although like I said in that other thread their live shows on the GR tour were fantabulous.
