Please. Black Metal has been like 5 times better since 1997, instead of being dead. Yeah back then it was all awesomes and I have tons of respect for the Norse but seriously, releases like Si Monvmentvm..., Salvation, The Work Which Transforms God, Darkspace I, Tentacles of Whorror etc. are more diverse and much better all around.

kinda-sorta off topic, it's what i like the most about Absu, the thrash and excellent riffing. do you know of any more killer bands going that way?

Deströyer 666 (and many other Aussie bands) and Aura Noir maybe? Black with major thrash elements.

No one really sounds like Absu though. Musically and conceptually, one of the best bands ever to emerge from the US.

I don't know if I gave somewhat of a wrong impression, but I like almost all of those bands you mentioned, some of whom I like a lot. I can think of some others as well (admittedly, I was trying not to get into a name game)...

Heck, there are probably more bands putting out quality bm now than there were in the early 90's. The difference is that it's not all in one area, one scene, and that there are so ridiculously many knock-offs and mediocre to downright weak bands that dilute the genre now.

So when you say that you totally disagree, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that.

Nevermind, I assumed this thread was more about the actual quality the than "scene". Anyhow, I agree that there is a lot of crap out there now, but I also strongly agree with the idea that more bands out there today put out quality.

Melechesh definitely. Kinda like Absu with the Celtic influences replaced with middle-eastern.

i've heard all 3, but i have to check out a full album from Aura Noir. what about Sauron?

and indeed, Absu are pretty unique. i mean it's black/thrash but the kind that's hard to copy.

I voted false, because it's just, just still alive, with one or two half-decent bands like Taake and 1349 keeping it breathing. I also think USBM is keeping it going too, as I like Absu and Xasthur

Taake more or less defined its sound in 1997 same goes for Absu. Most USBM is really heavily based on Burzum, Darkthrone and the French and German classics. 1349 Is more norsecore than BM and Xasthur isn't really that original either.

What about Lunar Aurora? I thought you liked them Misha? Do they make the list of exceptions?

I liked em, I still like that Paysage split a lot, but that doesn't mean it's very original, it has Hvis Lyset Tar Oss written all over it.

I dont see too much Hvis... in it, but ill agree that its not exactly original.

Azrael,

I was trying to think of this this the other day when you were asking about thrashy black metal, but I couldn't come up with the name until just now. Try a band called Must Missa. I have the 2004 album Ma Ei Talu Valgust (or I Can't Stand The Light in English), and it might be something you're interested in. I know they have some newer stuff, but I haven't heard it.

Also, if you like Immortal (?), there's a band called Rimfrost that is kind of like Immortal with a little thrash to their sound as well. Not as strongly recommended as Must Missa, but it might be something to give a try too.

i heard an Aguynguerran song back when Misha (i think) first opened a thread about them, i liked it but didn't bother to check out more from them (i'll work on that).

as for God Dethroned i followed the suggestions from the thread where Radagast first asked for them. pretty cool, although i'd call it death/thrash.

I second Must Missa! The new stuff is solid too, more thrash and less traditional black metal than the old stuff. Killer live band too.
