it's not just that i find it too slow (i like quite a few slower Metallica tunes), it's samey and too long.

not only is trapped under ice a great song, Master has a few turds here and there - namely "the thing that should not be". that's one of the worst songs the old metallica ever did, imo.

I think once your past track two on master the album just goes downhill fast, but half way through ride it just gets better.

Be intresting to see a poll between Ride and say Countdown. Have a feeling the poll would be the other way if it were done with those albums

It is a solid tune, one that's been covered countless times because of this.

I'd say that even between Ride and Peace Sells it'd be even more even (and right now, its at 18-11, which certainly isn't overwhelming). Despite Master of Puppets being constantly hailed as the best thing ever by the metal media, I find many metal fans are much more disposed towards Kill, Ride and even Justice.

And The Thing That Should Not Be is simply boring, plodding, and goes on for way too long. Not an interesting riff in sight.

even if in all-round quality Master doesn't come up on top compared to other Metallica albums, the best songs there are arguably the best they've ever done.

If i was to be cynical, i would say metallica sold out after the release of Kill em' All

I know this attitude exists...but

I guess Metallica sold-in? when they released the extremely dense, technical, poorly produced and lengthy And Justice for All?

I'd completely agree with that statement. I think MoP gets hailed as best album just because of the self-titled track and not for the whole album most of the time. RtL is easily a better all-around album.

I'm a big fan of Justice. Besides the lack of bass, I think it's a badass album. Newsted's site used to host tracks with enhanced bass but I'm not sure if they're still up there.

The whole lack of bass thing makes me laugh. First off, they may have pushed Newsted's tone down into the mix, but it doesn't matter; the album has plenty bottom-end, and gives a nice "bassy" sound. Moreover, countless bands, old and new, release albums where you can't hear the bass guitar at all. It's not a big deal. It happens all the time.

and Brahm, how the hell can you like Battery and not like Damage? they're very much in the same vein.

Same vein, but one has good riffs and is thrashing to me while the other does not and seems very forced.

Actually I agree with that. I love Battery but hardly ever listen to Damage Inc.

True, but this was Metallica circa 1988. Burton got a great bass sound on Puppets, just two years earlier, and pretty good ones on RTL and KTA. They were a major band with enough money and stuodio experience to at least get at least a little pulsing "thump", but instead...for some reason they just fucked up the bass sound on that one. The guitars have the bass (EQ) and treble boosted, but scooped the mids, and leave us with a really hollow sound, that could have been helped out by a good bass (guitar) mix.

The songs are really good though.

If I am correct, that is the only long-haired era Metallica song where they tuned 1.5 steps down, which makes it even chuggier.

I'd really like a re-mix/master on Justice. I don't like the sound of it at all, I just find the production really thin, especially on the drums unless i turn the volume way up which I really can't do too often due to an ear problem. I think the album has some of their best songs but I rarely listen to it, unlike KEA/RTL/MOP which I listen to all the time.

Speaking of RTL, I think it's about as good as MoP. I hate to compare them, because which one I like the best varies from day to day. Overall I'd say MoP has the best songs (title track+battery) and RTL has the worst (Escape), but the rest of RTL is a bit better than the rest of MoP, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, bashing Metallica has definitely become a trend lately. I still listen to their early stuff quite alot, and some of their load-era songs as well. It was the first metal band that I really felt passionate about, and when I listen to their good stuff today I still get that feeling.
Man I hope their new album slays.

Megadeth are clearly in the lead now. There's no doubt there. And I like Master of Puppets better than Ride The Lightning because I like every song on MoP, but I can't stand "Trapped Under Ice." I think that song is crap.

I think that is one of the most underrated Metallica songs.

"Escape" is an awesome tune. That song was hard as fucking hell to learn how to play in high school!

"Trapped Under Ice" and "Escape" are probably teh best Metallica songs that haven't been played since 1984.

Am I the only person who feels the chorus of the title track of MOP sounded silly? - "Master [pause] Master, blah blah blah blah, Master [pause] Master........." I found it funny too.
