Does anyone else like them? I picked up one of their albums and downloaded the other and I can't put them down. They may easily be my favorite American black metal band mainly because the only other one I can think of is Goatwhore.

Nachtmystium is from America...but that's about the only other one I can think of as well.

I bought their album Rapture a few weeks ago and think its fucking amazing. Tradition And Fire gets many many plays.

I havent found many (or any) black metal bands that I like, the fact that this album had alot of thrash in the mix helps me alot with liking it.

Exactly how I feel. This isn't a strict black metal album.

Leviathan, Xasthur, Krieg, Hills of Sefiroth, Sapthuran, Black Funeral, Nachtmystium, Lurker of Chalice, Weakling, Draugar, Judas Iscariot, Wolves in the Throne Room.

All USBM. However, usbm often focuses on depressive or suicidal concepts, which i dont think would suit anyone in this thread :P

Silent man, have you got any Rotting Christ or Desaster?

You beat to me the big list. Anyhow I like Dragonlord too. Good band.

Dragonlord has not impressed me at all! And of course the U.S. BM scene has much better bands as FTR has mentioned.

I dug their debut a hell of a lot.

But for some reason, I can't get into their second album as much. It sounds more tight and more well played, but it just seems to bled together into one big mass.

I didn't like Dragonlord much, but that was a while ago so I should probably check them out. One of the few BM bands I like is Ludicra, and they're from the US. It's because i'm a Jon Cobbett fanboy really.

They are ok, nothing outstanding though. I prefer my black metal atmospheric.

This is pretty cool though I don't normally go for "symphonic" bm nowadays. As FTR said there are plenty of USBM bands that are more adventurous, but probably not as easy to get into.

True. The USBM scene also has much better bands than FTR has mentioned. Absu, Profanatica, Havohej, VON etc. :P

I don't really understand it myself either, heh! You can hardly tell the songs from each other, the lyrics make no sense, the sound quality is bad (not in a good way,) but somehow it all adds up to produce a unique atmosphere. I have to be in a particular mood to enjoy it, definitely not the kind of stuff i'd listen to every day.

I get sort of a similar vibe from a lot of bands in the more "non-musical" side of BM. Ildjarn, early Beherit, Abruptum, Krieg's noisier material etc. No one really sounds like VON though. (Quite an achievement considering the age of the band.)

Thanks for that explanation! I'll try listening to Von again with the material I liked from, say, Ildjarn and early Beherit as reference points.
