This thread is more for the UK guys, but to enlighten the globe, we endured the 'celebration' of British Music on live terrestial TV Wednesday evening. I watched it mainly to see if someone would say the word 'Cunt' at like 8.01pm, but no such luck.

I wouldn't normally think of bringing this topic up like this, but it did get me thinking about the state of mainstream music here. It would seem that the majority of the UK public would celebrate passing fads or dreary, uninspiring Indie acts. I admit that In one hand I don't want to see bands like Dragonforce, Iron Maiden or Bal-Salgoth being part of that commercial monkey, but at the same time, the awards dished out were just bollocks. Here's the 'Pick' of the awards handed out that pissed me off-

Best British Group winners: Arctic Monkeys
Also nominated: Kasabian, Muse, Razorlight, Snow Patrol

(In other word, dreary fucking Indie shit, although the Arctic Monkeys were quite amusing when picking up their awards.)

British album Winner: Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Also nominated: Amy Winehouse - Back to Black, Lily Allen - Alright Still, Muse - Black Holes & Revelations, Snow Patrol - Eyes Open

(again, if it's not dreary Indie shit, it's the current fad of 'Chav' bitches)

and the one that pisses me off more than any-

Outstanding contribution to music: Oasis.

(The magpies of music who have gone from The Beatles to T-Rex to The Kinks and back to the Beatles and yet they are considered original.)

In a perfect world Maiden should definitely have picked up all three of those awards (and I know Dragonforce have been around for years, but best Breakthrough anyone?), but Heavy Metal is always so passe in the eyes of British Media, that it never gets properly recognised. Even current UK 'Flag bearers' like Bullet for My Valentine don't get a mention. British Metal has done more for world music than any passing fad created by someone British since the Beatles/Stones, so why can't the mainstream just say, 'Ok you long haired smelly Bastards, you deserve Kudos for something, now fuck off out of my sight!'

I suppose it's an oppotunity to get more British Metal acts signed and get the UK metal flag flying high like it did circa 1980...

i heard 2 or 3 Arctic Monkeys songs and they all sucked horribly. i can't believe this is the band that everyone is raving about it.

Fair play to Oasis tho, they've sold a shit load of records and inspired almost all of this new indie shit (regardless of weather you think thats a good or bad thing its still pretty impressive). And anyone who thinks oasis are original is a retard. They always say that they ripped T - Rex off and have never made and comments that people could interpret otherwise.

Indie bands? :lame: Doesn't sounds like you know what Indie is to me...

Anyways, Muse is not so bad.

Sorry, but Maiden aren't bringing anything new, they once did, but not anymore.

Indie has a different meaning in the UK to in the rest of the world, the bands mark mentioned are mostly indie bands in this sense.

Christ, Muse are a terrible band, how can you say such things?!

So Indie is what we call Britpop or something?

Yeah, pretty much.

Ok, I suggest calling it Britpop and driving on the right site of the road.

Britpop kind of means the 90's stuff like Blur and Oasis now because of the newer bread of 'britpop' like The Arctic Monkeys. So when we say Indie we mean the newer style and britpop means the 90's style. If that makes sence??

I think of The Arcade Fire when people call a band indie. I think it's they're sort of the sound of the "genre" (boring). But aren't actually on an independant label or anything.

I heard The Arctic Monkeys were basically a boy band that was put together and had all their songs written by one of the groups who normally do Britney Spears or whatever songs.

The Artic Monkeys are a fucking terrible band. And I've never liked Oasis, although I'll admit to loving Muse and quite liking Amy Weinhouse. Kasabien had a couple of ok songs on the last album, but the new one was pretty bad. And I really want to kill Lily Allen.

I didn't watch all of it, but compared to past Brit Award shows this year really wasn't too painful. I didn't like any of the acts a whole lot, but I didn't expect to, and I'm not naive enough to expect any metal. Not that any British metal bands are currently worthy of an award.

Oh, I definitely didn't expect any Metal (although Steven Tyler did surprise me as he does appear to be evolving into his daughter with amount of Botoxing he's getting!), but I think more my point is that if it was a celebration of British Music as a whole, then 'Maiden, Priest, Sabbath and other BHM & NWOBHM bands deserve some recognition (lifetime or the like) as they have been some of the biggest influences on a genre ever.

Yeah I agree with that, I'd love it to happen. Although they'd probably mess that up somehow, like when Channel 4 inducted Black Sabbath into the Music Hall of Fame, but called them 'Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath'

 Agreed. That's the thing though, that if it wasn't for that fucking show of his (that was shown on C4 if memory serves...coincidence?), his missus being constantly on ITV and the brats he spawned, I doubt they would have got inducted anyway.

I'd just like to see Ozzy off the rails collecting an award Prime time on ITV next year. THAT would be worth watching. If only he could just get away from his management & PR bods for a week or two!

Yes, they aren't bringing anything new. But I would say by contribution to music, it need not be something new, but just contributing to music by churning out albums that are acclaimed by fans and/or critics. Of course, many may argue that Maiden did go thru a lean phase and probably still haven't come out of it. I feel Maiden definitely have contributed in a huge way and continue to do so.

Maiden definitely contributed a lot to metal. It's impossible to deny. They deserve an award definitely, but I don't think they would be bothered about it.
