What is your favorite powermetal band?

I voted Primal Fear. Simply put, they kick major ass. I consider them more of just a Heavy Metal band as opposed to Power Metal though. To me Power Metal has lighter, less bottom heavy sound, compared to Heavy Metal. Power Metal requires screamers, while Heavy Metal not necessarily so. These are just my definitions though (as unperfect as they are), to keep me sane when I try to classify crap. The general metal would probably has a different consensus.

And it makes you feel guiltily close-minded... bah. But I honestly do not like Tarja's voice. The songs are pretty good, but Tarja... ugh. But when Tony sings on the concert as a guest it's really good!

ha, I tried that argument about 6 months ago and every yelled at me. I always contend that true Power Metal is from the US and bands like Warlord, Omen, Jag Panzer, Armored Saint, Cirith Ungol, Maniala Road etc....... That bands today such as Paragon, Tad Morose, Morgana Lefay, Brainstorm, Angel Dust and some others are the true Power Metal where as the whole Euro Fairyland stuff like Stratovarious is just a symphonic offshoot of speed metal.

I found Oceanborn in a Used Bin a few years ago. I gave it an honest listen, but I thought it was downright yucky. Tarja does a horrible impersonation of an "Operatic" singer, she's not even close to real Opera, and the music was downright wankariific. I think people just buy their crap so they can say, "See guys, I'm not close-minded, I listen to this chick fronted band". I'd take Stratovarious over Nightwish anyday of the week, and I think Strato is the gayest thing ever.

I think NIghtwish is one of the greatest bands ever. Obviously she knows how to sing real Opera if she is classically trained to do it..........but her voice just changes to match what is written so.....no.....she doesn't sing in a TRVE opera voice. You have to listen to Therion for that shit.

Anyways, they don't and never have played Power Metal so they are really moot in this discussion.
