I don't care for Devin musically but man he's a funny bastard.

Not sure I'd label Mikael Akefeldt a genius even if he is extremely gifted.

okay if its a pointless fanboy discussion and you think its stupid then why do you keep replying? and in any case why do you have to be so obsessive over what we mean a genius is. its just a general term. someone can love a band but know that they aren't geniuses, and someone can think a band is alright but think they are geniuses. for instance, i don't love tool but i know they are geniuses because no one can come up with what they come up with and they keep turning out the goods.

Ok youre just contradicting yourself, so let me ask you:
For the sake of this poll, Who do you think is more of a genius? Devin or Mikael?

You got your answer now? good, so here comes the second question:
how did you came up with that anwser?

If you picked your winner by their number creative efforts, then you agree with me.

If you choose him by taking in consideration of who do you think that writes better music or who is the one you enjoy the most, then you also agree with me.

If by any chance your answer was something like: "i think theyre both genius", then youre not only not serving the purpose of this poll but you also missed the point i was trying to make wich was about choosing who is more genius than who.

I hope that helps you understand what i was saying and if you wanna know, my answer would have been Devin but not because i think he is more genius than Mikael but because i like his music more, and i think ive already said that on my first post.

And by the way i didnt say that OUR disscussion was stupid or that i think you are a fanboy, if i keep replying its because this is a discussion and thats what we are supposed to do, and my welcome was sincere.

I enjoy Opeth way more than Devin's work, Mikael is a musical genious.

I picked Mikael because I get more out of Opeth than SYL in general (I know Devin has done other work, but I'm not familiar with it), and I reckon Opeth are a bit more consistant. Devin's a fucking awesome songwriter though and a better frontman live.

This is yet another pointless poll, but I'll say Devin as he is my favorite musician.

I haven't really heard much Opeth, while Devin's 'Terria' is one of my favourite albums ever, so it's not really fair for me to vote anything. However, I'm still gonna :P

I haven't heard enough Opeth either, but I have heard everything by Devy. The reason is b/c his music grabbed immediatly, where as Opeth's made me tired.

Btw, I do like Opeth, just not as much as a fart produced by Devin Townsend.

I suppose this is why this thread is quite a good one (although to pick just two 'masters' of the prog world is a bit restricting). I'd class My Arms, Your Hearse and Ghost Reveries as two of the finest albums in my collection. Damnation certainly pushed the barriers of Opeth music, but SYL do have Alien...

I personally prefer Devy, mainly due to his variation in bands, whereas Opeth are good and Mikael is very good, i find that Devy is in a different league of song writing(aimed at u Fe Chamb)

ahh fair enough yeah my thankyou was sincere aswel lol.

i personally think that mikael is more of a genius because i know devi is an amazing songwriter and i think he is also a musical genius but he has had a few bad songs and i can't think of one bad song mikael has written.
i love devi's work and know that he has a lot of tallent but for me its mikael.

also, it may just be me but i really don't like devi's guitar tone for some his songs. most of them are fine and it really captures that wall of sound vibe but it just doesn't pay off in some songs.

Are you talking about his solo stuff or Strappin Young Lad? or both? i have a friend who doesnt like SYL and one his main reasons was that he couldnt stand the guitars, he thinks that they sound "boring" ,i dont know if he was referring to the tone but apparently there was something that he couldnt stand about it, he also refers to devins solo albums as "wierd shit"

I personally do like opeth, im not crazy about them but i do like some of their albums, IMO Mikael vocals are one of the best aspects of the band even if he is too predictable at times.

I don't find Devin's riffs particularily great for the most part, but I love the tone he gets from layering his guitars and soaking them in effects.

Opeth are good but sometimes they stick to an idea for way too long and it gets hard to sit through.

i think the syl tone is really nice and completely suits the music because its a lot heavier than his other stuff but i think the tone for the devin townsend band stuff is for the most part really good but some songs like in 'gaia' and 'judgement' don't really suit it.
and yeah he is pretty odd isn't he but vampira is immense and the videos even better haha. he wouldn't be devi if he wasn't weird lol

as for devi's solo stuff, i think it is pretty amazing. i LOVE earth day. :D

Yeah I think he was using a 7-string guitar on Synchestra and it really didn't suit the music too well.

Well it has that "droom" sound that makes chords sound like crap.

Droom? Is that a word? And there isn't one thing that sounds like crap on Synchestra.

Synchestra has the same tone that Terria has.
