Just take a look at Iron Savior's line-ups *takes a look at IS Dark Assult leaflet* Kai Hansen is the mainman of Gamma Ray and Piet Sieleck, Thomas Nack and Jan Eckert are all ex-gamma ray members. However, IS are quite big in the powermetal scene, however they are not among the largest players.

I am a little suprised that nobody voted for Rhapsody or Hammerfall. Indeed their last albums have been rather disapointments...

Thats two albums ago...look at the lineup now. Hansen has left, Eckert has left. Only Piet and Thomas remain from that list. Since Dark Assault, Iron Savior have released their best two albums...

...and are indeed up there with the big players. On equal level with bands like HammerFall and Primal Fear. Iron Savior have not released a bad album since they began. Yes, Iron Savior has ties to Gamma Ray...but so does two others bands in that list.

Well off that list I picked Angra :dio:
From what I heard of Blind Guardian Nightfall.... onwards they are the most overrated powermetal band around.

For American style power metal I probabbly go with Agent Steel or Manilla Road.

I was going to say "Yeah, this guy knows what he's talking about, he likes Angra!" But then... man, you should get a mouth full of wet poop when you talk about The Guardian.

BG and the brilliance of "Nightfall in Middle-earth" reveals vividly what the band is about.

Quoting yourself ist krieg.

I don't know about "best", but my favorite from those choices is Primal Fear, so that's where my vote went.

Hansi's voice annoys me for some reason. I need to check out thier older material. I am told its a bit diffrent than the modern stuff.

If you cant stand Hansi's voice then BG is not for you, no big deal i have friends who feel that way too, but that doesnt mean that they are overrated.

There are some bands I don't listen to because of the vocalists despite most people enjoying them. It's not unusual, and it doesn't make a band "bad" or "overrated". Hansi is extremely talented, but his voice is just unique and could never be to everyone's tastes. The same goes for the nasal tone of Tobias Sammet or the squeaky high notes of Andre Matos. Both guys have quite a talent too, but what makes them sound unique is what makes them not for everyone.

I don't know what power metal is.

I have seen these statements in this board:

- Iced Earth is power metal.
- Sonata Arctica is power metal.
- Lost Horizon is power metal.
- Kamelot is power metal.

These four bands, IMO, sound very different from each other ... Is power metal that broad ?

yup.

I think all the subgenres of metal are extremely broad now.

The way i see it Power Metal started in the 80s and was actually a combination of thrash and heavy metal, thus you have bands like Iced Earth, Metal Church, Jag Panzer and Agent Steel to be called Power Metal, but there was actually another type of power metal wich was a combination of speed and heavy metal with fantasy or medieval elements like Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray,Hammerfall, Nocturnal Rites, Edguy, etc, wich later developed in to a more melodic and keyboard oriented type of metal like sonata Arctica and all of the so called "Flower Metal" bands, since this kind of power metal (some people actually refer to it as just melodic metal) became more popular people start to asociate all power metal with homosexual behavior and silly songs about girls named Dana , and thats why all those Power Metal bands you listed do not sound alike.

Bull Shit. Judas Priest are 95% heavy metal. Nuff said.

Yeah I have to agree with this totally. Christ they are the definition of it. Unleashed in the East 79, perhaps one of the purest definitions of what metal is.

I picked them, Nightwish is my fave on the list but they aren't Power Metal so I went with Primal Fear.
