Interesting thread folks.

I'm in between my bachelor's and master's degrees in History. I'm going to specalize in something to do with the Byzantine Empire/The Crusades.

I'm a project manager for an electrical contractor. I've spent the past year in a single wide trailer on a jobsite for an Eli Lilly project we're working on. I should be out of here and back to my cozy home office by summer, hopefully.

I'm a victim of the system.

In most areas, less than 20% of the residing population has a Bachelor's degree (it's usually around 15). Our community here is young (most people under thirty), so that number should be even lower. Yet our good-for-nothing metalhead demographic seems to be at about 50%. Go figure.

First I was thinking: dream job! but then I remembered you're from Holland, and - more importantly - so are those girls. So no.

I don't think Jaden meant it like that. Dumb people graduate college all the time; a college degree doesn't mean shit in itself.

If anything 50% college degree among "metalheads" just means most of us come from fairly affluent families, which is something I suspected all along.

Look at the Norwegian black metal scene for example---a lot of wealth for all that anger!

Well, he did take it too far, but it does say a bit more than that.

For one, metalheads often have a connotation of being lazy. This shoots that notion in the foot.

And I agree that college/university is full of idiots, but we can generalize a bit. The fact that so many of us have (or are getting) degrees says something for our intelligence. But by no means am I implying that a person who goes to university is more intelligent than one who does not. However, if you were to weigh all university graduates with those with no post-secondary education on intelligence (obviously, they would need to be of the same demographic [i.e. The West]), I'm pretty positive the former would come out on top. Maybe there are statistics out there, but I don't feel like looking for them.

I'm sure there is some relationship at work, but I'd submit the stronger relationship as "metalheads" with relative affluence.

It takes some deviation to appreciate metal (good metal anyway). Deviation requires one to think for themself, which obviously connects to intellectualism.

Jaden, dunno, on one hand metal fans are different from most music fans, but on the other they can be pretty similar-minded amongst themselves.

I'm with emperorblackdoom on this one... I think it's a matter of affluence more than intelligence.

On a somewhat similar note... I've often wondered if there was a relationship between the affluence of fans, and the criterion for 'selling out'. Punks and metalheads are usually middle-class, yet they expect their bands avoid excesses and wealth in order to stay "true"... Hip-Hop and rap is strongly rooted in the lower-class, yet the ultimate goal is to have wealth and excess. It seems that each group of fans wants their favorite bands to be whatever the fans are not.

Oh, and back to the actual topic: I have a BA in English Literature, and I teach English in Japan.

Very interesting idea.

And Jaden, I wasn't trying to dismiss your view, I just feel it may be a bit of a reach.

In any case, studies on all these potential relationships would be quite fascinating.

I'm really just proposing ideas.

It seems obvious to me that the intelligence level of this forum is much higher than that of the general public. I want to know why.

You gotta be open-minded to listen to some of the crazy shit found in metal. Open-minded people tend to also be more intelligent.
