I have some rudimentry guitar skills before picking up bass, but it doesn't really matter. All you need is to learn two guitar scales for your more fancy playing, and a lot of patience besides. What I do when learning bass (or guitar) is to pick a song and work it out note by note. Black Sabbath is great for this because the basslines follow the guitar riffs, making them easier to identify. I also just sit in front of the tv and doodle away on it; strengthening my fingers and becoming familiar with what strings and frets make what sounds.

And it's only four, fat strings with no chords! :D

There are chords on bass.

I mean those tendon-ripping all four fingers playing twister on the fretboard nightmares you get with playing guitar.

Dude, that's such a derogatory comment on bass. So your saying all those losers on guitars to play bass?! Hahaha! Damn, Steve Harris wont be happy. Bass playing is beautiful and unique on it's own man.

WTF?

Lol what I meant was that you make it sound like as if bass playing is easy and less technical from the guitar.

Any instrument can be as technical or as basic as the player wishes it to be.

True, but then there are some instruments in which a higher level of technical skill is required to make it sound good. On bass you can make a cool noise with only a very "bass"ic level of ability (lololololoplollolololpalpopl)

The bassline for Life Eternal by Mayhem is easy, and it makes you feel like the shit playing it.

However, Learning To Live by Dream Theater is a lot harder. You have to be much more "in tune" with your abilities to play it.

Ha ha-- I'll get my coat.
