Like.........the doom metal version of Wolves in the Throne Room?

I bought this cd when it first came out and i love it, i love the moby dick, ocean, sea type theme of it, i like that 21 minute song on there too, very epic stuff

I still need to listen to it, is it similar to Lair of The Minotaur?

By his original description, I would say no.

Lair of the Minotaur is more like a combo of brutal death and sludge.

There is sludge in Giant Squid, but no death at all.

The list of influences ive read in reviews is pretty standard (Isis, Neurosis, Pelican, Jesu etc)

Yeah, that's what I figured. Post-rock influence usually gives the music an almost calm feeling. In contrast, listening to Lair of the Minotaur is likely to send you into a headbanging frenzy.

But the drummer from Pelican is in Lair of the Minotaur!

I just listened to this, finally.

I wouldn't say they're oozing with energy, but their highly inlfuenced by post-rock and sludge, so that's not exactly shocking.

Actually, reaper's original description is dead on, though I might swap the words doom and sludge in that sentence. I really liked "Neonate", the keyboards are an especially nice touch, and the vocals sound really good. "Ampullae of Lorenzini" is too calm for it's own good, and I lost interest rather quickly.

Overall, good find. I'll have to check out more from that album.

I think it sounds too clean, manufactured to be a doom metal band. But that's maybe because I like my bands without too many buffers or layers of engineering craftmanship... There is a lack of spontaneous energy. It would classify it as alternative rock. . Although I like the keyboards eerie effects on a couple of them songs, I think many of these good additions of ideas and the practical exercise of them get lost in the mixture that is the musical outcome.

Im bad at differentiating different types of doom and sludge. My apologies.

And if it isnt doom or sludge Kakaman, then just dreamy post-rock?

No dude, sludge works just fine. In no way, shape, or form is the song Neonate rock. Dreamy post-sludge, a la Mouth of the Architect, with an underwater atmosphere is probably the most accurate description.
