I don't like this response. Its like when someone asks you to come see their band and you ask what they play and they respond with "oh a little bit of everything, some of its like Coldplay and some of it's like Metallica" (I swear to Buddah someone actually said that to me once).

Anyway I say "mostly heavy metal."

Not metal. Heavy metal.

Yeah, I don't like that response either. I know that in Zad's case he really does listen to everything, but here in the states 80% of all people in their 20s give that response. And what does it mean? Basically that they listen to every type of pop music, far from everything.

it's the same here in portugal. everything means rnb, rap/hip-hop, pop and "even metal" (that would be linkin park).

I think I lost a friend once when they said they listened to everything - "radiohead, children of bodom, mogwai and the arcade fire" -, and then I asked why everything only included bands with white males playing guitar.

I usually shrug and say "metal". And then when they ask what bands, I just go "eh" and if they persist I say "you haven't heard of any of them".

"showtunes" or " country"

followed by a kick to the sack. As i am usualy wearing a shirt of a band i listen to the question is asinine.

And i have yet to figure out why people i have never really talked to or would call a friend should care

And metal fans wonder why we're seen as a bunch of elitist jackasses.

Heh, thanks. I did actually get asked what I was listening to the other day by some kid. He was with his parents, so I didn't want to say 'Suffocation' (which shuts you up, Jeff!), so I just smiled condescendingly.

I don't say it in an elitist way, but I see what you mean...

I don't wonder, and I don't particularly care. I'd rather lie or simply omit my interest in metal. I could rattle off 250 different band names at the drop of a hat and get nothing but blank stares from average joes...what is the point of telling them about it unless I wanted to be a jackass?

It's different around people that show an interest in metal, and I certainly have gotten people into the genre or more into the genre, but they have to come to me first.

Ah, well then it all depends on who's asking the question eh ?

If a 12-yrd kid and her grandpa come asking you that you wouldn't start giving out names of all the obscure and extreme metal bands you know of.
Then on the other hand, if Devin Townsend comes asking you that, I'm sure you'd try your best to show him you're at least half as elitist as him!

As a side note, some kid at school asked if I was a metal kid, and I said no. He seemed confused about that. I said that I listen to a lot of it, but I'm not a "metal kid".

So nyahaha. :dio:

My response is always the same. First I ask what kind of music they THINK I listen to, just to see the response. Then I say "No you're wrong". They ask "what kind then?". I say "My music scares people." If they ask me to name some bands I say that they would never have heard of them, and if they persist I name off some of favourites. To this date, no one's ever heard of them.
