The shocking thing about this isn't the death, but the fact that certain people on these boards seems to think anyone that likes Metallica deserves to die. It's only fucking music. And haven't you heard, it's no longer cool to dislike Metallica, so jump on another bandwagon.

 Are you being naive or sanctimonious?

I'm gonna go with "Massively naive" for $100.

ahh the clue is todays daily double

and the question:

Will metalica write a crappy song about this and add it as a bonus track on St. Sodomy ( thats the yet to be anounced symphonic version of st anger)?

I don't think the issue here is really Metallica, metal, or anything else other than the fact that two kids got in a stupid argument over a stupid subject (as kids often do) that led to one kid grabbing another's shirt. Then those two friends step in an escalate something that was already stupid into something immeasurably stupid. It doesn't matter if it's metal, rap, style, or their favorite TV shows. The fact here is that a group of kids turned to violence over a stupid argument, and the ones responsible deserve everything they get for this and probably more.

Of course, the media will spin this into "another evil metal incident". If the kids had been arguing over a movie or an ex-girlfriend, they'd talk about the senseless act of violence. Since a (former) metal band was involved, it'll become an excuse for anti-metal crusades.

The witness said Conley told them, "You guys don't know metal. Metallica is nothing."

I think that it's the clash of two big evils in Metal. As an older fan of Heavy Metal, when I hear inconsistant things said (by anyone)about bands or music I care or even cared about, I do get this 'Holier Than Thou' [sic] feeling to turn around and correct a bad point made, even if I'm nothing to do with that conversation.

Teenagers (and I know this sounds ageist) are big kids who are learning the rights and wrongs of being an acceptable social creature and this bunch made a mistake by thinking that the school yard was applicable in the 'real world'. Lesson learnt the hard way and serves them right for any backlash. Teenagers, whilst emotional human beings, are influenced by cliched attitudes which your MTV rock star tries to convey. Even Metallica themselves had the feel of Nethandertals with their 'Metal Up Your Ass' attitude.

I'm no way the most knowledgable expert on Metal, I can't tell you what brand of cigarettes Abbath of Immortal smoked whilst writing 'At The Heart Of Winter', but there will be someone out there who has studied their band and has an air of righteousness about themselves and will make you feel inferior if challenged. And kids will always be cheeky little bastards.

I bet if the debate was about Justin Timberlake it wouldn't have got this amount of press, Metal's too easy a target.
