Oh yeah and Zach Hill from Hella

Good pick, didn't know you knew Hella! Although this vid is a bit (well, more than a bit actually) over the top, it's still fun to watch for a few minutes. Hella's pieces are far more interesting and dispay Hill's original and creative rhythms better.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=jdMDcG3zAEI

Example.

Yeah I've actually only heard their latest album (and 2-3 songs from Hold Your Horse Is). I think that's an odd spot to start with their discography but I figured I'd listen to vocal Hella first so the vocals couldn't disappoint me later...

Pete Sandoval is my favorite among all the blast beat guys out there. He has a very personal touch, unlike a lot of these ultra-technical types nowadays. Too bad he prefers über-crappy drum sounds these days.

i don;t know. i think the "crappy" drum sound you speak of works alot better for him than the "good" drum sound alot of peopel are useing in deathmetal now.

He is using just the kind of sound that most DM drummers favor these days (a big part of the reason why i don't like modern DM much): triggered with very bad choice of samples. The bassdrum has more high end than the snare, for fucks sake! (I know, it gives fast double bass patterns a clearer sound, but i still hate it!)
At least his stuff isn't quantized in Pro Tools to nanosecond precision like so many drummers nowadays, so his playing still maintains some groove.

I can't understand why he uses this kind of recording technique, as he could clearly manage without it. On the live clips that i've seen and heard, he sounds tons better than on the new records.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. The hard thing about drummachines and computers is that people who have no clue about drumming are probably going to place every beat precisely where it's written down. Playing out of time is just as important as playing in time.

Why do death metal bass kicks from the last 10 years all sound so crappy?

Exactly. The same of course applies to other instruments besides drums.

Because most the time the guitars are playing really low notes + bass the kicks have to have a higher pitched/clickier sound to get through the mix.

Yeah, the bass drum has to have clarity in that kind of music, but when the bass drum sounds more trebly than the snare, something is severely wrong!

Yeah definitley. I hate when you can't tell the bass from the snare. v_v

I remember reading a youtube comment that said being able to play a different rhythm on each leg was pointless because what made a good drummer was a strong 2 and 4. :lame:

Yeah, it's like a painter that only uses indigo blue. The same goes for the production of most rock and metal, when did anyone ever make the rule that a specific album should have one production, why can't the sound of something vary? And DEATH to fvkking 4/4 :dio:

That's one fucking killer groove indeed awesome sticking with his right on the cowbell and toms. His use of Moeller in the groove is also quite nasty

Wow. I seem to be the only one here who realy likes the trebbly bass drums. Theres a degree that gets to be too much.

I think that sandoval has used alot better samples than alot of others i have heard recently. But i do agree with you he does sounds alot better live than on record.

I read somethign in a metal(sort of) magazine at the groccery store today. it was a list of top drummers/bassists (on the same list for some reason). Number two was Ulrich and three was Flea from rhcp .

i was all sorts of confused

I'm too lazy the read this whole post to see if he's already been mentioned but Yanic Bercier from Quo Vadis is my all time favourite drummer. The guy's amazing, he's technically fantastic and I love his unique style of playing.

I also really respect Flo. I even went to a drum clinic he hosted (Gene Hoglan was in the audience, oddly enough) and he has godly skill. I don't play using his style though, so I wouldn't call him my favourite.

Yeah, I also read that he lives really far away from the rest of the band and that they only need to rehearse songs once or twice before they're tight enough to play live lol.
