That's the fella. I'm bad with names. Add Negura Bunget's drummer to the list, he's pretty darn good as well, as is Origin's.

The simple fact is, there are a helluva lot of good hellblasters about, even in less good bands like Shadows Fall. The golden age of drumming?

Bonham, obviously...
Then, Jojo Mayer, Flo Mounier, and then I don't know enough drummers.

If people are going to mention metal drummers for the sake of it, why not Pete from Morbid Angel/Terrorizer? Jim Austin was sick on Into Eternity's TSOA... And George from his personal project (Darkness Eternal) does some really sick drumming.

But, all in all, you know you aren't gunna find many candidates for the best in the world in the metal genre. It's almost metal's way to suck or be simple minded on purpose. You need the guys who could pass for studio drummers, like the very well mentioned Gene Hoglan. Speaking of which, I met him at Destroyer 666. Got a picture with him. Might put it up one day show how gigantic the guy is.

Yeah he's ridiculously big.

Also the drummer from Converge is totally awesome because he can play weird complex rhythms right next to a simple punk beat and sound perfect playing either of them.

Complex how? Like, jazzy, or simply obscure rock beats? Weird sigs? If you don't know, it's okay, but I know you play an instrument so maybe you might be able to pick up a little on it.

I was actually listening to Jane Doe last night and I thought there were a lot of odd time signatures, but its mostly 4/4. He just drastically changes his speed a lot.

Also the guy from Ephel Duath (who left  ) deserves a mention just for being amazing and being a 50 year old jazz musician firing off tha duble bass kix

On Painter's Palette? Yes, he was great.

A couple I forgot to mention (although I could keep adding them, as I said) - Danny Herrera from Napalm Death ( :dio: ) and the guy from Gojira.

My all time favorite drummer is Ken Owen from Carcass. I didn't see him mentionned in this thread. That's a shame.

A honorable mention goes to Scott Lewis. The only thing I heard from him is his work with Brutal Truth on EXtreme Condtions Demand Extreme Responses.

Al Foster (Miles Davis' guy.)
Elvin Jones (Coltrane's guy.)

Playing with the best? You gotta be one of the best.

Buddy Rich probably was the best, and most talented, though. That being said, watching his solos is still kinda redundant. What a waste of great skill, he could backed entire orchestras by himself. All the videos I've seen seem like one man circus acts. Oh well, he's dead.

Buddy Rich for number 1, but not by as enourmous of a margin as Misha might want us to have him ahead by.

Oh, Sean Reinert. Forgot him. "The Machine." Cynic, Death for a little while, then a pleth of various other projects you may be familiar with. Honestly, I'd put him a little higher than Gene who followed his tenure in Death, just cuz I like Sean's work a little better. But, that's not from a technical point of view. To be honest, it's hard to listen to Death solely for the drums. I'm usually too swooned over by Chuck's vox. :)

I watched the drumming part of Quo Vadis's live dvd and their drummer is kinda ridiculous.

Alright, alright... How about listing 10 for "our scene," and as many as you can in order of rank for the "rest."

Fenriz, despite completely shunning technicality these days, can actually play. Listen to Soulside Journey and Goatlord for proof.
Goatlord features his best drumming IMO, reminds me of a jazz drummer at times, with all those weird fills and playing between beats and fluent tempo-shifts on that record.

Pete Sandoval is my favorite among all the blast beat guys out there. He has a very personal touch, unlike a lot of these ultra-technical types nowadays. Too bad he prefers über-crappy drum sounds these days.

Chris Reifert isn't necessarily the fastest or most technically adept drummer out there, but he actually has his own style, a rare thing in death metal. Killer vocalist too.

Sometimes a bad drummer is the best for the job. Abaddon's sloppy timing was integral to the filthy sound of Venom's old works.

That would be Atsuo, and he does indeed kick ass.

I'm also a bit shocked that Bill Bruford hasn't been mentioned yet, he's easily one of the best ever in my opinion.

Also, I've always liked:

Vince Verkay (Evoken)
Earl of Void (Reverend Bizarre)
Jason Roeder (Neurosis)
Matz Ekstrom (Candlemass)

2 of da most underrated drummers in metal/hardcore ever.

www.myspace.com/buriedinside (Michael Godbout)
www.myspace.com/gospel (They don't give individual members credits so I don't know his name)

My knowledge of jazz blows chunks because I can't stand improvised music, so I really have no clue who actual great drummers are.

Also I'll second the guy from Neurosis, I love bands that use sort of tribalish rhythms in sludgy music, and I think he pretty much started that. Also I thought he was going to fall apart from the look on his face when I saw them live, so that was really cool (actually they all looked like they were in a lot pain except Steve Von Till, who looked like a bad guy in a scifi movie).

Get the Preparing for war boxset which has a disc of demos and rarities and a dvd with live footage. Fenriz could certainly play.....i guess he just got bored of it

i don;t know. i think the "crappy" drum sound you speak of works alot better for him than the "good" drum sound alot of peopel are useing in deathmetal now.

its too tinny in my opinion.
