And Charles (see, I listen!) recommended the War of the Worlds album to me, which probably isn't what you're looking for, but is film-related.
Yeah! Is there anyone else here except for me that totally loves this record? It's Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War of the Worlds. With loads of extracts from the book narrated by Richard Burton and some key roles played by some 70s musical personalities including the godlike Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. The music is prog rock all the way through describing the destruction of Victorian England in music and songs. Seriously, if you listen to this alone in the dark it is really, super super scary, and some of the songs stand alone in their own right as great works.
Anyhoo, when people say cool film soundtracks to me I often think of Argento and Fulci
I don't know if it's what you're looking for, noodles, but I can't recommend enough that you track down Goblin's soundtrack to Suspiria, and Keith Emerson's soundtrack to Inferno (both by Argento)
On a related note, Morte Macabre were recommended to me by Misha and Stefan. They play proggy ambient stuff influenced by people like Fabio Frizzi and Riz Ortolani, who composed music for 80s Italian horros such as Zombi 2 and Cannibal Holocaust. Necro stuff
