Alright, now everyone knows Xyphon .3 is the best drummer in the galaxy, but I'm more interested in our dimension and planet, so no snobby comments about that. Anyway, I used to like sitting down at a table with a piece of paper and a few friends, and debating out a list of the top 10 of something, like albums, or shit like that. Voting is gay, and no one will ever fully agree, but the discussion is fun, so let's try this...

Now, I know the 10 best are prolly nameless folk who do solo acts and play blindingly fast rediculousness in retarded time sigs, but something can be said about musicians who actually play with a band, and coorporate productively in the clutch with other people. So, soloing and band drumming are both qualities in my eyes, I'd hate to see this list go the way of all the lonely drummers who have all the talent in the world, but none of the band mates...

Still, some candidates I could see making the list would be Neil from Rush, and that dead asshole who everyone tries to emulate.... what was his name? Buddy something?

Chris Pennie is the only drummer of I've seen playing a solo and though I could listen to a whole album of that kind of thing. But he's also said that he buys DVDs of drummers who are way better than him and play back up music for Prince and whatnot

I can't list 10, but Gene Hoglan should be on every list! Also, a very underrated drummer is John Tempesta, best known for playing with White Zombie. But he's also played with many other bands like Exodus and Testament and Helmet. His work with Testament showed just how badass he really is!

Here's some video:

I heard Dave Suzuki is on par with Tim.

Has anyone else heard about a Flo/Derek drum off? My friend swears something of the sort happened, but you know rumours.

Has anyone seen Jo Jo Mayer? Misha sent me a video of him, and he did a trick with his (1) hand and (1) foot that made him sound like Flo at his best in the midst of one of his "solos."

In terms of metal drummers, I gotta say I respect Pablo Clares and Max Kolesne the most. Max because he's as fast as they come, but isn't allowing other influence into his game. He wants to master and craft a METAL style of drumming. Pablo, because he's like you Flo or your John Longstreth, but purely more interesting at it. But, he's a no name when it comes to the average enthusiast. Which sucks.

I 2nd Steve Smith.

Gene Hoglan
Flo Mounier
Tony Laureano

and I also really liked Bjorn Gelotte's drumming before he moved on to guitar in In Flames.

Pablo Clares - drums (ex-Totten Korps, ex-Execrator (Chl), Magnanimus, ex-Megiddo (Chl), ex-Adkan, Azael (Chl), Perdition (Chl), Sheolgeenna)

That's not the Barbarian Wrath Megiddo, btw. Atomic Aggressor is my favorite band he took part in.

If people are going to mention metal drummers for the sake of it, why not Pete from Morbid Angel/Terrorizer? Jim Austin was sick on Into Eternity's TSOA... And George from his personal project (Darkness Eternal) does some really sick drumming.

But, all in all, you know you aren't gunna find many candidates for the best in the world in the metal genre. It's almost metal's way to suck or be simple minded on purpose. You need the guys who could pass for studio drummers, like the very well mentioned Gene Hoglan. Speaking of which, I met him at Destroy 666. Got a picture with him. Might put it up one day show how gigantic the guy is.

Yeah he's ridiculously big.

Also the drummer from Converge is totally awesome because he can play weird complex rhythms right next to a simple punk beat and sound perfect playing either of them.

Sammy J. Watson from The Apex Theory. He's a jazz drummer, and awesome.

SHHH... (HOPE DIGGY) (<---- Listen)

The problem with these kinds of threads is that no one really gives a shit about what the other person says. "Oh, you said Lomardo? OK, I raise you one Hoglan!" And also, the average music fan has no idea what little nuances and technical ability sets apart one drummer from the next.

Complex how? Like, jazzy, or simply obscure rock beats? Weird sigs? If you don't know, it's okay, but I know you play an instrument so maybe you might be able to pick up a little on it.

No, you can, when you see someone do what Flo can with one hand and one foot, it's pretty obvious. :P

Well, the greatest drummer is obviously Buddy Rich.

The Ved Buens Ende guy. Too drunk to remember his name. Oh year, Carl-Michael Eide. Too drunk to press backspace.
