Time to threadjack! Here's a few videos from from some of the best rap groups I've heard in recent years:

NAPPY ROOTS - AWNAW
NAPPY ROOTS - PO' FOLKS
NAPPY ROOTS - HEADZ UP
NAPPY ROOTS - ROUN' THE GLOBE

Nappy Roots! Man, I love this band. The country, southern flavor is awesome. The songs are wicked catchy and there's no "gangsta" anything to be found; and they called one of their albums Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz, which I find funny.

KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - SUBURBAN LIFE
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - ANGRY YOUTH
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - FULL THROTTLE
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - SLEEPERS
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - DAY DREAMIN' FAZES
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - POSITIVE VIBES
KOTTONMOUTH KINGS - ENDLESS HIGHWAY

Awesome band; I don't care what anyone says. "Suburban Life" was the first song I'd heard by them and it reminded me of that early 90s House Of Pain/Funkdoobiest/Cypress Hill kind of stuff. I loved it. They've become a favorite band since because they're not just a straight up rap band; they have acoustic tracks, they sing, some tracks are mostly punk, while others mix punk and hip hop (like "Full Throttle"). No other band sounds like these guys! And, like The Roots, they have a band with them on tour.

CORPORATE AVENGER - FAULT THE POLICE
CORPORATE AVENGER - CHRISTIANS MURDERED INDIANS (Fan video)
CORPORATE AVENGER - GAY MUSLIMS FOR CHRIST (Fan video)

Corporate Avenger are a band I discovered through Kottonmouth Kings. They're similar in that both incorporate more than just hip hop, but Corporate Avenger all about attacking politics, racism, etc. Some of their lyrics and song titles are out of control.

12 STEPS TO HELL, PART I
12 STEPS TO HELL, PART II

These are worth watching just because they're funny. It's a promo that was sent out before Souther Discomfort was released. It has some skits, music from Southern Discomfort, and some videos, but you get a good idea of what these dudes are about. These dudes were wicked original, but they split up a few years ago; now Danny Boone, the fatter honky, started the band again but they're different now. Not so unique.

BIG BROVAZ - NU FLOW

I heard these guys in the UK when I lived there. I thought this song was great, but they're not all that impressive overall, too much R&B nonsense. I still love this song, though.

tons of rap is epic, who cares about musicianship and tons of rap has "powerful emotion".

sit down.

Anyone who listens to music for "amazing musicianship" is weird. I listen to music because it sounds good to me.

I guess I don't really hate rap...Eminem's lyrics are sometimes funny as hell, and I like some of the old school Run DMC type stuff. But, I do hate the stuff you hear on the radio now...it annoys the fuck out of me that my friends would rather listen to that than metal. I mean, it's not like they're listening to the shit out of ignorance--they genuinely think it's better music than metal.

Yeah that's what I meant to say but I was drunk so all that came out was "uhh..."

I don't especially like rap, but my sister playing it constantly around me made me realize that it has it's moments, I'm just too lazy to hunt down all the bands.

Dude I heard Corporate Avenger years and years ago, Fault the Police I still have on a Metal Hammer sampler. Great song!

Forgot all about them until you reminded me now. Hammer did a feature on them one issue as "the next big thing", then promptly haven't given them a single mention since.

EDIT: However, I never thought I would see Big Brovaz mentioned again outside of some sort of early noughties nostalgia programme. Especially not on this site...

Hahaha. I like the beat of the Big Brovaz song. I'm not really into R&B, which is all over the track, but that beat kicks ass. I guess they don't fit what I call "good rap," but that song is great (I think).

And Corporate Avenger are excellent. If you haven't heard the song "Jesus Christ Homosexual" you're missing out. Obviously the song title sounds like a joke, but it's actually not that at all.

CORPORATE AVENGER - JESUS CHRIST HOMOSEXUAL

I can only imagine why Metal Hammer, or anyone else, doesn't want to promote this band!

I like Run DMC, is that rap or hip hop? and what is really the difference (not to sound ignorant or anything)?

I also like alot of Bone Thugs N Harmony's songs.

Other than those though I dont really dig much into the genre, even the stuff I do like and listen to once or twice a month is only a mild interest.

Some is good, some is bad, as with every other musical genre (except for pop-punk, which is 98.4% bad). I'll admit, a lot of the current wave of commercial R'n'B ified stuff is dreadful. Dig a little: Dalek, Sage Francis, Rahzel - there is good stuff if you're prepared to look for it. Heck, even Public Enemy's last wasn't that dreadful, as I was pessimistically expecting.

I've hated most of the rap I have listened to, just a few rap songs that I liked. I can actually count them on my fingers. As for rap metal. I don't like even a single rap metal song I have listened to. I can tolerate rap, but when i hear someone playing rap metal, I just move out of there.

If you hate all rap then buy a subwoofer and get an album about 'killin niggas' from the 90s and it's fuckin hilarious.[/i]

I always considered rap and metal to be opposites as well. Rap is awful. I just dont see what people like about it. It actually pains me to listen to it. There are other genres of music that I simply do not like, but can appreciate why somebody else would. Rap is just alien to me. I find it to be the worst thing in the entire world and I blame rap music form ruining America. It turned every teenager into an illiterate and it taught them to praise and revere a lowlife lifestyle.

And yes, while there is some older rap that is fun and catchy and even funny, 98% of rap that I have heard is the aural equivalent of an abortion.

Yes.

I'm not saying good rap doesn't exist, that it takes no talent or that its all just a bunch of bastards glorifying violence but I've never heard any rap music that I like. It teeters between offensive to my ears and silly sounding, which I'm sure a lot of people say about Metal so oh well.
