1 - Elvenking - The Winter Wake
Everything about this album is amazing. It brings back that Heathenreel sound and steers in the complete opposite direction of Wyrd (which is a good thing). Their best effort thus far.


2 - Heavenly - Virus
I was never a big fan of this band until I heard this album. Catchy and heavy (for power metal). there is hope for power metal and these guys show it.

3 - Cellador - Enter Deception
The next big power metal act and worth all the hype. This album has everything a power metal fan could ask for (except for lame ballads).

4 - Daylight Dies - Daylight Dies
Melodic doom a la Katatonia. Very good for those long Monday morning drives. I wish I could've seen them live.

5 - Amon Amarth - With Oden On Our Sides
Finally an Amon Amarth record that doesn't sound like one song played over and over. Very good pillaging music.

6 - Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
It's not your typical SYL, but it's a great Devy record, plus it finally has one of my favorite SYL tracks; “Far Beyond Metuuuuuuul!”

7 - Wuthering Heights - The Shadow Cabinet
Great forth album by these guys. While losing some of their progression they gained a few more folk elements and still managed to take a step forward from Far From the Madding Crowd (hard to do).

8 - Into Eternity - The Scattering of Ashes
Love this band. Still remained catchy with a few added elements of classic metal... and great vocalist ( ).

9 - Arsis - United in Regret
More technical this time around, but still the best melodeath band out there today. (I have a feeling this album is going to go up on my list)

10 - The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra
He can't make a bad album. This is probably his weakest attempt, but it still manages to rise above the majority of the crap that's out there. I have a feeling next year’s release will be phenomenal.

Bob Dylan - Modern Times
A masterly return for the world’s best singer/songwriter, “Modern Times” has such an inviting, laid-back feel that it’s impossible not to enjoy. The man may have aged, his voice may have aged, but the music he creates is as timeless as ever.

Muse - Black Holes And Revelations
Having progressed from mere Radiohead clones to something all of their own with 2003’s “Absolution”, many wondered where the three piece from Cornwall would head next. The answer? Outer space, bringing elements of everything from contemporary dance music to pure psychedelic prog, creating another slice of modern Rock that is intelligent without losing that Pop purity that makes each and every song on “Black Holes And Revelations” brilliant.

Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells
That Black Metal survives in any form at all is a testament to the various artists who have taken the roots of the genre and twisted it into their own sonic darkness. Drudkh, if not at the head of the line, are certainly damn near it, and ”Blood In Our Wells” takes the band’s already radiant folk-infused formula to new heights.

Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Fears that the world’s most exciting Metal band would tone it down after signing to a major label are proven ridiculous as Mastodon up the ante for album number three. Not falling into any obvious traps, “Blood Mountain” is a deep, progressive burst of Sludge that will take many listens to unlock, but is sure to remain exhilarating each and every time.

Melvins - (A) Senile Animal
No other band can claim the achievements of the Melvins, having quietly made some of the best Rock music around for a small group of fans for over twenty years. Teaming up with the Big Business duo on bass and drums, “(A) Senile Animal” embraces catchiness without sacrificing any of the heaviness that fuels their sound. Will this finally propel them to the fame and fortune they deserve? The revolution starts here…

Sunn O))) & Boris – Altar
Few would have predicted that Drone would have reached such popularity, gaining mainstream recognition aplenty and opening the doors of Doom to an entire new generation. “Altar” is a psychedelic ooze of beauty, providing the perfect gateway to explore the genre, and with these Eastern and Western giants collaborating, what else would you expect but a classic?

Suffocation - Suffocation
As well as seeing the latest album from Cannibal Corpse, 2006 saw the welcome return of New York’s finest with their self-titled opus. They’ve not deviated, they’ve not sold out; Suffocation remains as heavy as ever with what could well be their best album yet. Packing the force of a sledgehammer with the subtlety of a shotgun, this is what Death Metal is all about.

Peeping Tom – Peeping Tom
We’ve been waiting a long time, but it finally arrived, music made by Mike Patton that is both song-based and easy on the ear. Featuring collaborations with an impressive group of artists, from Rahzel to Norah Jones, critics may hate it in comparison with his more chaotic material, but here is crafted a brilliant record. Call it pop, call it whatever you like, but the man’s delivered yet again.

She Said Destroy – Times Like Vines
Coming completely out of nowhere, this Norwegian Progressive Grind outfit have reset the formula for Extreme Metal. Mixing brutality and melody with an expert hand, She Said Destroy put their peers to shame with ease.

Enslaved – Ruun
Continuing what they started with “Below The Lights” and “Isa”, the true kings of Norway are back again with an album at least as good as its two predecessors, if not better. With “Ruun” in addition to their back catalogue proving them the best Black Metal band in the world, Enslaved’s triumphant legacy is continued with style.

I should probably check out the new Muse since I thought Origin of Symmetry was pretty kewl, like Radiohead on steroids. She said destroy sounds quite awesome as well.

1) Katatonia -- The Great Cold Distance

At first, I was kinda put off by this album, but I knew that Katatonia couldn't fail me. After dedicating the time and patience to this album, I really have no choice but to call it the album of 2006.

2) Into Eternity -- The Scattering Of Ashes

Awesome musicianship. Wooooo.

Hahaha, and that's all the 2006 albums I have. I'm pretty confident that nothing can top Katatonia's release for this year, though.

I'd like to make a list but I'm facing the following three problems:

1. I'm having a hard time remembering which albums I bought/downloaded during the last 12 months
2. Then I need to figure out which of those mentioned above were actually released in 2006 since probably half of them are older.
3. And then from those I have to pick which ones I like best. Well that's not really that hard compared to the previous 2 laboring tasks but still....
