Synchestra was my first expierence with DTB, liked some of it, but as a whole it didn't really get me going. I've been told it's a little different from the other stuff though, which I've been meaning to check out. Too bad I'm a poor bastard at the moment..

Yeah, DTB is different from Devin's "solo" albums (they're all solo albums, though). Give the link above a shot and listen to the samples.

I bought Terria after thinking Heavy as a Really Heavy thing was funny and that this was his attempt at serious music and was amazed. I also think it was the second metal album beyond Tool that I bought.

Synchestra is an ok starting point for Devin's albums since it'll prepare you for what to expect from them, but I also don't think its nearly as good as Terria/Infinity/Ocean Machine.

"Life" was neat. I'll probably dig deeper into the Ocean Machine, since it seems to be one of the more popular one's as well.

I would glady do anything to shake Devin's hand someday. I've loved just about everything he does. I have listened to Devlab...not a huge fan. It's not bad, but not my scene. Every thing else he has done has been a main focus for me in creating my own music...a big influence.

I think Synchestra is a great album to start on...especially since some of my friends did start on that one. Since that they have grown to love im about as much as I do. I guess it takes a bit to get used to, but with everything I do these days my first listen is usually able to hear a lot of the subtle stuff. After you record a few albums you start to hear the small things I guess.

Terria is so good it hurts my head as well as ocean machine/biomech. The new SYL has been on my playlist since it came out. I think it's the best SYL to date...mainly because I guess it has more of a reference to his DTB style.

Sorry to go off...but I think Devin Townsend is easily one of the most talented individuals in music today.

The New Black is most definitely my favorite SYL album for that very same reason. It's awesome!

Yo all,

It's (finally) a combi of syl and dtb, super heavy stuff, super pretty stuff, some ambient bits, some humor. No drummer...'drumkit from hell' (thanks Fred!) it's like a symphony or a musical...one long piece with a story and characters. won't be done for quite a while. I've started it, and I just want complete control this time. Tentatively called
'The Mighty Masturbator'

From that description I'm imaging one 60 minute long song that covers pretty much everything he's done in his career and my imagination likes it. :P
