No one mentioned Roger Waters yet?

Most of my picks have already been mentioned; Deathspell Omega's more recent works have awesomely well thought lyrics.

We're rocking metal motherfucker
We don't like change underwear
We don't like to wash our hair
Waiting to go out on tour

We're rocking metal motherfucker
We don't give a fuck

I never have to work
We're playing sexual metal
I stay at home and masturbate
I fucking need a porno mag

Is this for real?!! Never change underwear? Reminds me of my housemates.

As for the lyricist

Steve Harris
Geezer Butler
Joey DiMao
Old Metallica
Kerry King?

They're Japanese, so i would believe that they take this stuff very seriously. Japanese people are crazy.

Eminem is also a great lyricist. It's hard to deny that.

Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection (Some beautiful dark poetry.. evil lyrics with no cheese factor to be found)
Fish of Marillion (Some awesome stuff right there)
Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree
Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth
Warrel Dane of Nevermore
Jonas Renkse of Katatonia (The way the lyrics of Viva Emptiness flows together with the overall feel of the songs.. pure brilliance. Discouraged One's also has some great lyrics. The Great Cold Distance featured some average stuff though..)
Duncan Patterson of Anathema (Love all of their lyrics but there's just something about Angelica and a few others penned by him)

Hey, it's good to finally see someone else here appreciating Viva Emptiness. I was beginning to feel alone on these boards in that respect. I'd forgotten about them, yes, Katatonia and Anathema have some of the best lyrics in metal. Burn The Remembrance in particular is such a simple, beautiful yet powerful poem.

Mirai from Sigh writes some excellent lyrics, as do the dudes from Meads of Asphodel.

And you CANNOT go past Dead for lyrics. He was by far the best part of Mayhem.

I love Viva Emptiness, it's by far my favorite Katatonia album actually. I'm confused to why even some big fans of the band seems to loathe the album.. I guess because it's different, but that's what makes it unique in my opinion. On Viva they've really captured the feelings of desolation that Katatonia as a band represent in my view. While it's not clearly a concept album, I still get the feeling that each of the song tells a story of their own, at the same time being a part of a larger entity. And Burn The Remembrance is beautiful, not only the lyrics, but the way they are sung. Wealth and a handful other songs are brilliant as well. Can't even begin to understand why so many dislike Viva, but to each of their own I guess. :)

Jari Mäenpää and Tony Kakko

It's easy to find yourself from their lyrics when you're feeling all angsty and the songs kick ass as well.
