Hmm.

Genesis - Selling England..
Marillion - Childhoods End (Prog? Whatever.)
Zero Hour - The Towers of Avarice
Yes - Close to the Edge
Dream Theater - Awake

Progressive rock and metal are my favourite styles of music, still this is all I can come up with.

Also, Devin Townsend is one of my favourite bands ever, but I wouldn't say it's prog, therefore it's not on my list.

see what I'm saying. Townsend isnt prog. He is progressive in his musical approach but he is not prog.

Well if we're going to do it that way I think I need to change my list to

Zero Hour - The Towers of Avarice
Zero Hour - A Fragile Mind
Redemption - The Fullness of Time
Ayreon - The Human Equation

since they're the only four prog albums i like >_<

Well said. All I know is that prog metal came from prog rock and Townsend doesn't have much of the prog rock in his music. His music is weird and ground breaking, but that doesn't make prog. Whatever, I'm confused, I've been typing this post for like half an hour and this is what I came up with.

Also, drunkedness.

How could you not add The Towers of Avarice to your first list? It's like the best prog metal album ever :P

Also, I love the Volta, but I wouldn't call them prog either. My advice to you would be to check out the prog rock genre, you'll love it.

A Fragile Mind is crap by the way, just wanted to say that.

I think Terria could be considered part of the prog genre (not so much Infinity or Ocean Machine). Also bands like Mars Volta or Tool take a huge influence from 70s prog rock and have a lot of the attributes (long songs, dramatic, technical, concept albums :P).

"influenced by prog" vs "sounding prog" vs "being progressive" gets kinda confusing

I've heard a lot of prog rock. My general reaction was that it was good but then I'd never listen to it again :\

If Devin doesn't count then I'll throw in a few Symphony X's and some Yes (if we are including prog rock).

(No order)

Genesis- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Genesis- Foxtrot
King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King
Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd- The Wall
Fates Warning- Awaken the Guardian
Rush- A Farewell to Kings
Symphony X- The Odyssey
Queensryche- Operation: Mindcrime
Fates Warning- The Spectre Within

As you can see, I mainly prefer progressive rock to progressive metal.

LTE 1 & 2 - awesome instrumental prog music

DT - Scenes from a memory - still their best release imo.

Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle - awesome concept album.

Symphony X - V - love all their albums but this one has something special.

Spocks Beard - Snow - played this to death great album.

On the virg - Serious young insects - Virgil shows why he's probably the best technical drummer in the world.

Derek Sherinian - Planet X along with Virgil Donati created one of the best prog/fusion instrumental cds ever.

Vanden Plas - Christ 0 great cd

Queensryche - Rage for order hard to pick between this and Mindcrime but tracks like Screaming in Digital are classics.

These are the ones that come to mind there are plenty of others talented bands with great releases but originality is something that a lot of prog/metal bands are missing.

In no particular order:

01. Cynic - Focus
02. Zero Hour - A Fragile Mind
03. Ayreon - The Dream Sequencer/Flight Of The Migrator
04. Fates Warning - FWX (yes, a killer album)
05. Fifth Reason - Within Or Without
06. Fragile Vastness - A Tribute To Life
07. Erik Norlander - Into The Sunset
08. Lana Lane - Every Fucking Album!
09. Dan Swano - Moontower
10. Dream Theater - Train Of Thought

Not sure if these are my top 10, but they're my favorites.
