Haha I was wondering what kind of reaction I'd get from this thread. Its actually a post I read when someone asked the difference between all of metal's subgenres. I'm pretty sure the guy posting it was fairly honest, and if he was joking then he's a genius... the way some stuff is right from a very strange viewpoint and the criteria he uses to differentiate between genres is just hilarious.

A lot of video game music is metal. Next time you play NES pay close attention to the music and you'll hear anything from power to black to thrash...

Yeah, I totally know that, since most of my teenage years were burned away on videogames...and still more are being burned :P

Megaman X has the most METALZOR of all Videogame music...

Intro Stage

Spark Mandrill Stage

Some random Stage

I hereby declare Videogame music a metal subgenre ! :dio:

oh my god. those video games are metal. Now i wonder my getting into metal in my late teens had anything to do with the fact that i was a video game junkie from the time i was 8 or 9. I grew up on NES and SNES. I am going to check out some old midis from those games. This while thing just blew my mind.

Noodles is a real joker. But yes, I could never tell whether he's joking or not till he admits it.

Thrash as mainstream? A good thought to ponder. But I'll deny it. It started off underground and I think it still is. It's just there are a few bands that got signed to big labels and that's went everyone thought they've gone mainstream. It's slowly happening to Black Metal. Wait and see.

Eyesore you're right. Noodle's slowly losing his mind. He must have joined some Buddhist monastery.

What the fuck? It already happened to black metal. Tons of opportunist crap like Dimmu Borgir, Ancient and so on in the late nineties.

Doom Metal.

Like Black, it relies on atmosphere with heavy brooding guitars with long songs. Except their songs are twice as long as the typical Black Metal song. Black Sabbath are the originators of Doom and Metal in general. They don't use nearly as much growling as Death or Black, but there may be some. But just think Black Metal without growls, and you'll have Doom. You might like it.

I have many doom CD's with growls, and try adding black metal screams to some funeral doom bands like Tyranny, Comatose Vigil and Shape of Despair that won't sound like black metal, much much too slow hehe

On the technical stuff, how about grindcore? Especially math grind, not many drummers can match that speed and precision.
