True legendary status is involuntary and has nothing to do with whether or not someone "deserves" to be idolized. Idols and legends aren't the same thing. When someone is destined to be remembered for a few years of work decades, if not centuries after their death, they become legendary. It doesn't matter if they did things not worth remembering as well. Should the fact that Elvis basically OD'd on a toilet keep him from being a legend? No.

Frigid, you can invent in your own mind your own idea of what a legend is to you, but it doesn't change who real legends are and what they become legends for. Not all legends are loved by everyone, and not all legends did all great things. Some did very few great things. It's their affect on the community that makes them legends, not the artistic or practical merit of their work. In fact, by definition, legends can be exaggerated and falsified. Some people are legendary for things they didn't even really do. It doesn't matter. We are not in the position to decide who is a true legend. They just become.

Are you kidding? Bill Gates fucking revolutionized—and continues to do so—the entire IT field!

so? Bush has a lot of money, too.

Did you just completely disregard what I said? You think this is about money? Do yourself a favor and stick to Hellheim.

I know Gates revulotioized the whole thing, I'm not disagreeing with that, he deserves legend status regardless of how much money he makes. But what I was saying was that Kurt Cobain's multi selling records do NOT grant him legend status. A legend should be someone worth idolizing, imitating. Anyone with a week of guitar lessons imitates Cobain anyways, consciously or not. Didn't you say in another nirvana thread that most of the hit songs were written by his producer and that cobain left to hs own devices (In utero) is crap? I can't remember the exact thread or post, or if it was even you, but someone said that...

No. I didn't say that. I've always maintained that Nirvana/Kurt Cobain were legends. And no producer wrote anything.

FYI Frigid, I totally agree with you about people worth idolizing. I don't want to refute that at all, but there's just a difference between being an idol and being a legend, and I was just trying to make that clarification.

I think Kobain sucks too, but I can't change the impact he had.

I still remember seeing Nirvans for $5 before they exploded. Kobain was so high, he could barely get through a song, and you could smell his B.O. from 20 feet away

No, it makes me a teen who spent his high school years in Seattle before the word "grunge" had come into play. As far as we were concerned, they were verious rock, punk, and metal bands who all started immitating and sounding like each other once the "movement" started.

I was joking. If you tell a nirvana fan, however, that'll be their reaction.

I think sometimes a lot of you are looking toward music for the wrong things. You're peeling back the layers and scrutinizing every little aspect of it. That's not what it's about. It's not supposed to be complicated, you know!

Nah...I enjoy DragonForce and Edguy from time to time, so I don't think I make it all that complicated. Maybe when a particular person offends me, and I choose not to support them anymore, but otherwise, I just like what I like.

Dragonforce are ace! I just got Inhuman Rampage, and although the music itself is pretty cool in a super-happy Freedom Call kind of way, it was the bonus video that sold me. These blokes are bloody funny, and humour goes a long way for me in metal. In particular there is a quick scene where they are at a Lacuna Coil press conference, and one guy asks the chicky, "When you are headbanging and sticking your arse in the air, do you imagine your mother doing you from behind with a strap-on?" followed by stunned silence from the press - then much laughter. Fucking LOLZ! I'm a fan now for that reason alone. :dio:

It was either the drummer or one of the guys in their entourage. I'm not familiar enough with who's who yet. But shit I laughed hard!
