Hello fellow metalheads,
I'm sure all of us are more than sattisfied with the quality and quantity of reviews and forum discussions here at metalreviews. Eversince I started visiting this website a couple of years ago, I've found a true paradise of metal-related information. Since then I have also searched around the internet for similar websites not only limited to metal but other music genres as well but I have found few if none comparable to the quality of metalreviews. But this is not a thread praising metalreviews, we know how good it is otherwise we would not frequent it.

This is a thread asking for advice on more websites that contain reviews, mostly on other kinds/genres of music. Most of the websites I've found until now don't live up to my standards for several reasons.

Most seem to suffer from a unstable update frequency, other have a very small archive or amount of reviews. There are others who simply have a very weird style of reviewing that gives little information or help to the reader. And some allow everyone to post reviews, thus lowering the general reviewing credibility.

So, do you know of other review websites of any music genre that are worth trusting, visiting or even mentioning?

Did you just suggest metal-archives for reviews? That fucking place is the Wikipedia of metal! 95% of the reviews are whiny turdfests of drivel, and a good amount of information on bands and such is incorrect. No wonder why you hate music.

As for other review sites, there honestly isn't many great ones out there. Most suffer from infrequent updates (once or twice a month), bad writing, or just plain idiocy (see that site Aaron went to review for).

Before I joined this forum I'd read this site for years because of it's consistency and quality of writing. Sure, some reviewers have sucked, but they never last. I find this site to be the best if you're looking for quality, informative reviews. And I say that as a long-time fan of the site, not a reviewer. A few others I would recommend are:

http://www.melodicrock.com
This site is good for rock music, it's updated very frequently, and whereas the writing wouldn't win any literary prizes it is very well-thought out and informative.

http://www.metalcovenant.com
Not updated as often as I'd like, but generally this is a good site for quality reviews.

http://www.metaljudgment.com
Another good site, but not updated often. In fact, the last update was May, which isn't normal so this site might be all done, but check out the archives. The main reviews would basically be three reviewers with different tastes reviewing the same album.

http://www.metal-rules.com
Decent site. Updated often. The writing could be better.

http://www.nolifetilmetal.com
I contemplate doing what this dude has done all the time. It's basically his collection posted online where he gives short reviews/background info on each one. It's really cool. He's not a writer by any means, just a regular dude sharing his love for metal! This is one of my favorite sites, although it's updated infrequenty. It's still quite informative. The guy who runs it also sings for a thrash band called Ultimatum (http://www.myspace.com/ultimatummetal).

http://www.ssmt-reviews.com/db
Satan Stole My Teddy Bear is another favorite of mine. Again, it's not updated often, but it's very informative and well-written. Lots of good archive stuff here.

That's pretty much all that I'd recommend. I visit other sites, but most are shitty.

basementbar.com also knows as transcending the Mundane.
- its supposed to be a look at teh more intelligent side of things in metal. its a very good site with very good reviews. No forum, but you can post responses to the reviews and editorials right on the review page.

totally disagree with you. i have made many purchases going by their reviews and have had a prety high success rate. the only problem i have is that i hate the musical taste of a few of the new reviewers. The original reviewers were better. Still, though, i find the reviews to be pretty good.

Satan Stole my teddy bear on the other hand, is a bunch of fucking jerk-offs. While they have well written reviews they are completely biased against certain bands, to the point that i cant take them seriously. they think they are real smart and real cool and they should get hit by a fucking bus.

Metal-Rules.com used to be good and i still check it once a week or so, but it has gone way downhill. I did really enjoy their editorials when they used to do them. Its been a while though.

In the end though, i would say that this is my favorite site.

Wow, such a nice and big list! Thanks for the info and the pointers, I've already checked half of them and some have been bookmarked.
To be honest though, I was hoping mostly for non-metal sites since I feel that my metal needs are completely covered with metalreviews. Come on, some of you must know rock, prog, jazz and even pop review sites!!! Post 'em here if they are worth mentioning!!

What do you mean!? They've got such masterpieces like this one for Estradasphere's Palace of Mirrors

Quote:
California weirdos Estradasphere were discovered by Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3 and Faith No More) and he helped them get their debut full length, It's Understood, released in 2000. They released three more albums in as many years; the e.p. The Silent Elk of Yesterday, 2002's Buck Fever, and 2003's Quadopus. Estradasphere play odd instruments such as accordian, Japanese Shamisen, upright bass, and violin; and the style of music on Palace of Mirrors has been described as "Romanian gypsy death metal, Spaghetti Eastern, and Bulgarian Surf."

I just can't get into Estradasphere. I do like instrumental bands like Hematovore, Pelican, and Dysrhythmia, but when bands get so weird like Estradasphere does, it's hard to absorb. Songs like "The Terrible Beautypower of Meow," "Palace of Mirrors," and "The Debutante" have nothing to do with heavy music. Songs like "Title," "Six Hands," and "Palace of Mirrors Reprise" are just noise.

There are only three songs I was able to handle. I liked the powerful percussion on "The Unfolding Pause on the Threshold," the lively "Colossal Park," and the traditional instrumentation (i.e. bass, guitars and drums) on closer "The Return."

I know there are metal fans who get into this band, I just can't, it's too elusive for my tastes.

Album Score: 2 out of 10

at least they get some good interviews.

I gave a rock one, yo! How about these:

http://www.theprp.com
This is a lot of alternative, punk, nu-metal, etc. This site has come a long way, it started around the time nu-metal blew up, now it's essentially the Blabbermouth for everything Blabbermouth doesn't post about. The reviews are good, too.

http://www.musicaldiscoveries.com
This is a great site for female artists. I've discovered a lot of great music from here.

Then, of course, there's my signature. :)

Oh yeah... for reviews I generall just check Amazon.com, Rateyourmusic.com, or www.pitchforkmedia.com (because they make me laugh both with and at the reviewer depending on the review).

Just had a look at metalreview

I'm suprised no one from here has made a scene with their name as it so close to metalreviews

I wonder how many times someone has wanted to go to either website but has gone to the other instead just for missing or putting in the "s" at the end.

I'm assuming that this one has been going longer than the other?

Their website isnt bad but there are a lot of bands who have released albums in '06 and even in '05 that arent up there yet. Also it seems that they dont delve back into older band's albums (e.g- Iron Maiden) for reviews. The oldest Maiden album they have is Dance Of Death, yet have 5 different reviews for AMOLAD

I'll second this - some of the reviews are terribly n00bish (check out the Anthems of Rebellion review and then vomit all over yourself) but mostly they are well done and balanced and its very obvious they are written by big music fans.

Plus they are great people too, Steen is a crazy Manowar-singing bastard! :)

The be all end all to Metalwebsite is def metalreview.com for review and just because I have been on there so long.

Diabolical Conquest is cool if you like extreme metal only and like the unique elitest stylings of Nin Chan

DigitalMetal is cool and i have been reading them a long time.

Metal Judgement used to be cool but it is pretty much defunct now and has been awhile.

burnthesun was my fave forever since prob 99 but they are long since defunct.

This place is good too cos you all like Power Metal.

Metalreview reviews everything it gets sent to them, if it isn't reviewed is because they didn't get it and they don't do archives and old albums. They have readers review section for that stuff.
