How can you compare Dream Theater to Mastodon anyway? Aside from the fact that both are very technical bands (and yes, DT was still a prog band on their last two albums regardless of what anybody else says), the differences between them are night and day.

Anyway, Dream Theater I love. And Mastodon I should probably listen to more often.

James Labrie doesn't sound as gay as I remember him, probably because I listen to The Mars Volta now

EDIT: the songs get kind of samey and blah in the second half though >_<

That's b/c you're partially deaf... obviously.

Well they're all like normal song for 3-5 minutes, then 2-4 minute long instrumental break, then repeat of the chorus, then it ends.

How did you get into metal anyway? Aren't you the Maiden hater?

Maiden are OK, I doubt I'd eer make it through one of their albums though. I got into metal through Tool and Fear Factory, then my friend told me I had to hear Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork and Opeth... I also liked KMFDM, Nine inch nails, ministry and front line assembly back then too... they're all kind of metal.

And you're definitely not. I’m not saying there is nothing wrong with that, but your comments on bands that you don’t like (metal bands) are pointless. You are exactly what Eyesore and that Editorial are talking about. You listen to one maybe two albums by a band and form a judgment around that. Dream Theater has a huge list of albums dude. You hadn’t even heard their best until recently and you already formed an opinion about it two days after listening to it. Do use all a favor and stop wasting everybody’s time with posts about bands you don’t like.

+ sexist

...the only reason I make judgements about bands like Dream Theater quickly is because I can. If a band makes me go "holy wtf was that... i wonder if i'll like it", then I'll give them more time before making any sort of judgement. And my opinions about stuff do change...

btw i started this thread because I find bands insulting each other funny, not just to randomly flame dream theater =P

This post just proves my point even further.

So now the only way you can like a band is if you know their entire discog off by heart?

You implied it. Surely people can say if they dig a band or not without having to know every little detail about therm?

I didn't imply that. He gave Images and Words two days, if that. I never said anything about;

Octavarium
Train Of Thought
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Scenes From A Memory
Falling Into Infinity
Awake
When Dream And Day Unite

I'm sure the point NESS was making is that noodles bashes loads and loads of bands on the basis of listening to half an album or what he assumes they will sound like.

Well I've tried listening to Images and Words a few more times but when it gets to that song thats not only painfully 80s sounding, but has the first of the dull, long instrumental breaks DT are famous for, I turn it off. If all of the songs were as good as the first two I'd think it was a good album.

Just to satisfy my curiosity: when is an instrumental break dull and when not? Zero Hour has long instrumental breaks with fast synth races, guitar rackets, and stuff but they are on your top list. So what are the criteria by which you judge the dullness of instrumental breaks?

Instrumental section wise, imo: Dream Theater are one of the more dull non-post rock/non-jazz bands. On the flipside King Crimson are far and away the best (their composed stuff, not their improvised stuff) at instrumentals... especially when Adrian Belew has been in the band because the way him and Fripp arrange their guitar parts is omgawesome (get The Power To Believe for quite a few examples of this). Other bands with awesome instrumental sections are Behold... The Arctopus, Trephine, Tool, Indukti, Psyopus and Zero Hour. I guess the main thing that seperates them from instrumental sections I don't like is that they're based more around complex riffs or rhythms rather than actual soloing, which I think is boring as hell.
