So last night I sort of had a revelation while listening to maudlin of the Well's Bath/Leaving Your Body Map, that it was one of the best albums ever etc etc... and I thought it would just be sitting there in my top 5 albums.. but its much worse than that. It has totally killed music for me. I've tried going back to bands I considered my favourites and they just don't sound good anymore. The Postman Syndrome sound young and primitive. Devin Townsend's weirdness and layers just sound gimmicky and pointless. Opeth are repetitive, boring and redundant. Tool, Nevermore, Zero Hour, and Hammers of Misfortune are just boring riffing and melodrama. The only other bands I can really appreciate are Protest the Hero, The Mars Volta and Arsis for their energy, and Neurosis for how emotional and heavy they are.

I hope this is just a phase. :(

"sort of revelation..." again???

I had something like this too, with power metal. nothing sounded as good as Sonata Arctica. but it passed.

I think this is a cry for help, a request for a banning.

*dodges ban ray*

And I've gone through phases of loving a band like the Postman Syndrome or Protest the Hero and being annoyed that nothing else sounds like them... but never where it makes all the other music I listen to sound pathetic.

Dude, Bath is a good album, I'll give you that. It's NOT the best thing ever though.

Things like these happen, I'm currently on a Totalism diet, hearing nothing but epic drones on epic drumming in measures like 13/8 and 41/16 at the same time (I'm not kidding). It might pwn everything I listen to at this moment, but that was minimalism last week, it'll change!

I think what really blows me away about them is that they can do stuff like "They Aren't All Beautiful" and put horns into a death metal song, or go from "Sleep is a Curse" to "Riseth he the Numberless" and not really sound like an avant-garde or "weird" band... just how they arrange it fits the songs so well. Also while to use those songs how Riseth He The Numberless is just epic symphonic death metal while They Aren't All Beautiful is more stripped down and dirty.

I'm probably just overreacting, but it sure seems like all other prog metal is reaaallly bad compared to this.

Pan.Thy.Monium sounds nothing like maudlin of the Well's death metal sections... and even less like the rest of their music.

okay?!... is that because i have trouble falling asleep in the first place, do u think? :)

I have to say i have a hard time interpreting your response, and how you interpretated my first comment. The question is: what is contex and what how is our relationship. This i have learned in psychology.. soon i will have incredible mental powers to control ppl the way i want them to do, simply by telling them something to trigger a response/action - this of course needs empathy... so i need practice, u see.
tell me.. did u feel like buying a chocolate monkey just now after my first comment?
