At this moment in time:

Glassjaw - From the ashes of the 90's NYC hardcore scene came a sound like 'Elvis Costello fronting Bad Brains' which I had never heard before. Hearing raw passion and intensity like it got me hooked. The band progressed from post-hardcore to an alt-metal sound like no other and never leave my favourite band spot.

Jeff Buckley - Produced the perfect album in 'Grace' then died soon after, tragically. Amazing voice, amazing songwriting and people of all tastes love his work. RIP.

Mr Bungle - When I first heard Disco Volante I didn't know what to think, so I kept listening to it out of curiosity and slowly learned all the time changes and weirdness off by heart. These guys were unique and opened my mind to all sorts of shit and Zorn.

Gemma Hayes - Beautiful, Irish and the voice of an angel...

Darkest Hour - ferocious hardcore snarls with american and euro metal perfectly with great political and introspective lyrics.

Faith No More - Patton again with the Alt Rock/Metal monster who I got into after hearing Bungle!

Iron Maiden - Don't really need a description, but I discoverd them at 9 years old and have loved them since.

Tori Amos - She plays piano like she's possesed at the same time as singing haunting melodies... Her back catalogue is very varied and at times pretty bizarre, but she is a true artist.

Poison the well - Back in the day they brought the whole beauty/beast element to metallic hardcore, which has been duplicated countless times in modern metalcore, but nothing comes close to the perfection that was 'The opposite of December' in my eyes.

Boysetsfire - political post-hardcore who are the shit live.

City and Colour - Dallas Green's (the best thing about alexisonfire) acoustic material is beautiful, sad and emotional.

Protest The Hero - Only one proper album done, but thier unique proggy melodic metalcore is so fucking addictive!

Dredg Only just discovered their atmospheric, trippy rock that takes me to a better place!

The Black Dahlia Murder - Shouldn't be as addictive as they are, yet the dual vocals and constant blasting is irresistable.

Despised Icon - Technical Deathcore with everything I need; Mechanical and groove laden riffs, hardcore vocals with death squeels and grunts plus evil breakdowns.

I went to check them out, but the myspace didn't have any samples available. If you could link me to some it would be appreciated.
Yeah there's a lot of great metalcore mixed with different styles. I'm always aprehensive to mention metalcore around metalheads incase the tr00 mafia lynches me for being a discrace to metal, or something :D

In no particular order

The Tea Party : great Rock with middle east instrumentation fusion

Dark Tranquillity
: Consistent and always improving on their sound

Katatonia : always dark and depressive.

Kamelot : great power/prog with awesome singer and original material

Smashing Pumpkins : Great guitars, great lyrics and reminds me of me teenage days...

Moist : somber, heavy rock. first 2 albums were best.

Sonata Arctica : catchy, awesome guitar solos on earlier material.

Stabbing Westward : depressive, with soaring vocals and thoughtful lyrics on subjects of everyday life.

Nightwish : Melodic, Operatic, keyboard filled sweetness.

Weezer
: catchy as hell, and fun to sing along. Rock that is extremely guitar oriented, something that has been missing in the past decade in most rock music.

Live : The only act in the 90's that had success without having to play "grunge". Great rock band.

Dream Theater : prog act, masters of their instruments, jaw dropping musicianship.

Evergrey : original vocals, great heavy guitar sound.

Lacuna Coil : catchy, melencolic at times, and sorta dark at it's moments with death vocals sprinkled on top. Love all of what this band has produced with the exception of karmacode that has none of the above elements mentioned.

Jimmy Eat World : I'm probably gonna be slapped for mentionning this band, but I really like them. They make guitar oriented music, with solos here and there with very touching lyrics, which are delivered with effect due to Jim adkin's vocals.

Well technically Radiohead's first huge comercial break came with OK computer which came in the late 90's as LIVE's success was pretty much throughout the 90's.

Well if you insist on metalcore, I'm sure you also heard Between the buried and me? Alaska has great energy with some very intense moments which out-brutal many real metal bands. Croakies and Boatshoes for example.

Yeah, Alaska is great fun but I don't know why it's called metalcore?
Ah well, who cares...no one wants another one of those debates...

I don't think there are any Postman Syndrome song samples since they reformed as day without dawn...but I uploaded one of their songs to megaupload: linky

Some surprisingly cool and varied lists on here. My top 15 bands/artists of the moment (in no order) goes like this:

Boredoms - Hypnotic, inventive, crazy. They manage to veer away from self-indulgence while still being utterly alien and original. Every other band just seems feeble in comparison.

Jeff Buckley - Without a doubt my favourite singer ever, and 'Grace' is indeed pure perfection. If you don't like this music you have no passion.

Funkadelic - A band I've only recently got into but they have affected me big time. A funk band that also happen to be the best rock band ever.

Neurosis - Intense music that never lets up. I like everything they've ever done and they are always a step ahead of the copycats.

Tool - A cliche entry but I can't not include them. 'Lateralus' will always have a place in my heart, and just when I thought I was getting bored of them I see them live and spunk my trousers.

Led Zeppelin - Doesn't need to be explained.

King Crimson - Totally pompous prog but they've been on another level from day one. Every album holds a different atmosphere and quality and they are one of the few prog bands that earns the title 'progressive'.

Morbid Angel - I picked this band out of a hat of death metal acts because I hold a lot of them in equal regard. Really I could have put any of the greats there (Suffocation, Entombed, Immolation, Death etc.) because they all ruined my life and I love them all exactly the same amount.

Miles Davis - Miles Davis is just pure musical excellence. Don't even talk to me unless you love 'Kind of Blue'. John Coltrane and Sun Ra could also take up this place.

DJ Shadow - You can't really touch this guy. 'Endtroducing' is the ideal soundtrack to modern life.

Wu-Tang Clan - There are many rap acts that come to mind, but Wu-Tang just edge it. Style, originality, personality... they had it all! Whether you're a rap fan or not you cannot take anything away from a group of individuals who became one of the few musical forces in existence.

Nevermore - Even when I'm at my least interested with metal I can still listen to these. Beautiful melodies, amazing guitar solos and, most importantly, a consistant career.

Pearl Jam - Some may see this as a guilty pleasure, but this is 100% innocence and wonder. Sometimes I try and focus on their negatives and faults that other people seem to notice, and then I hear 'Dissident' and melt.

The Flaming Lips - The most positive and glowing band you could imagine (minus the cheese). There will always be a place on this world for them. Oh, and they are the best live band ever.

Devin Townsend - Damn, I still have loads more to list. Oh well, this guy should be here and I shouldn't need to tell you why. Just achingly diverse and beautiful music. I was gonna put Boards of Canada or Converge here but Devin just beats them as he has more than one magnificant album. However, 'Music Has the Right to Children' is pure lush, and 'Jane Doe' is the most intense album of all time.

Shit that reminds me I meant to include the Offspring. And then I meant to find a way of erasing Conspiracy of One and Splinter from my memory.
