Yes, there are tons of other things to read and comment on. No denying that.

I guess we are all pretty good at ignoring stupidity, even as blatant as this... especially online. No reason to stop now.

I'll ignore going forward.

What stupidity is this, bud? I dare say the only thing stupid in this thread so far was that comment you just made. Yes, some people dislike and do not agree with what Misha reviews, myself included (most of the time), simply because it is very far outside the realm of metal, but I respect the fact that his words are honest and I would never disrespect someone who tries to open people to a different style of music. I do that all the damn time here!

But Misha is a reviewer here and this is not my website, nor is it yours or any other forumite's, so it's not our decision. Disagree with it and move on, but to call the reviews, or possibly the fact that he's reviewing it in the first place, whichever it is, "blatant stupidity" is in fact blatantly stupid.

Thanks man (the pic was awesome by the way  ). Like Eyesore said, It's not my decision either. I just offer my reviews (I write them anyways) and metalreviews decides to take them, which I really like (ofcourse). If I had a metalsite, I wouldn't want this on either...
As for the ignoring stupidity, it's a good idea, and that's the exact reason I'm not going to reply to it.

By the way, maybe I have to mention the HUGE impact early minimalism (Dream Syndicate work for example) had on metal. The Sunn O))) that some here listen to (for example) is directly influenced by early minimalism.

It's just an honest opinion. My opinion is that non-metal reviews on a site called metalreviews is stupid. If I went to a car dealership for a car and they showed me a bicycle (while I would applaud their environmentally friendly attitude) I would be of the opinion that it was stupid too.

Exactly.

Indeed - that would have been helpful :)

Anyways - that is an infinitesimally small complaint in the grand scheme of the overall excellence of this site. This is the last I'll say on this -- moving on to post about all things that ARE metal :P

It would only be stupid if they offered you just a bicycle. To use your analogy, Misha's reviews are like you going to a car dealership, the salesman shows you a bunch of cars and then in passing goes, "Hey, what about a bike?" You say no, he shows you more cars.

No. You go to a car dealership, the salesman shows you a bunch of cars and then in passing goes, "Hey, how about a plane?" You say no, he shows you more cars. If I were the dealership, I wouldn't have added that plane to my collection, but if I was the customer, I certainly wouldn't have complained about the mention.

If I went to a car dealership and a salesman offered me a plane or a bicycle I'd think he was retarded....

Anyways - in the spirit of open mindedness.. I actually went and checked out this guys site. There is a sample in the multimedia section for those who want to hear it.

It's interesting stuff to space out to.

The car & plane dealership is not a good example, because here nobody sells anything.

Think in it as a cars museum, in which there's a section of "Related stuff" with planes, bikes, and similar stuff. Misha's reviews are this section.

I'm only interested in some of their reviews (the spacerock, postrock & folk ones, basically), and minimalist is not my cup of tea, but he's a good reviewer... and it's good to have a dissonant voice.

You always can choose don't read Misha's reviews.

Mishas reviews are always good and he covers ground that most metallers dare not step on. Things like post-rock and other alt metal.

It's a breath of fresh air from most of the fret wank that's out their.

I read this site because of the open attitude to the music that is reviewed.

...It must be a pianist’s hell to play at such an accurate tempo while disregarding the person next to you....

is this a joke, mies?
thinking that two pianists play the same melody (which would require two pianos) with a 1/10 second difference for 20 minutes is rather naïve, ha ha

My guess is that he just played the melody once or twice, and then threw it into a "program" twice, into two different audio tracks. Both tracks repeated for 20 minutes, one of the tracks get the tempo lowered a tiny bit... and viola, u have phase music... i have tried it for myself several times :D... not as good as the long track u gave me the other day, of course, since writting the melody takes a great deal of time if u want to make it right.
i know of course, he didn't have a computer back then, but there were still various techniques to make such music back then.

Dude, it's ok to call me naive, but this was performed live.
"Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann", from some editorial review on Amazon.
Look, it's still performed live: http://www.kaaitheater.be/productie.jsp?id=152&lang=en

okay.... shit... u win!.... impressive.. soorry.... *hug hug*

it's just that, i have a hard time believing a two guys can play the same melody over and over with a split second difference without fucking it up during the phase :D i mean, i once played piano and it was pretty hard not only to keep the tempo but also keep being focused. At some point during a song u could all of a sudden beginning wondering " what the fuck are my fingers doing, and how far have i gotten in the song?!" since you'll start playing without thinking about it, and when u start to think about again you'll fuck up..... bla bla bla...

What if they used earplugs and a metronome? I have no clue if they did, but it would still be fucking hard anyways.

Steve Reich's music is an exploration of rhythm and your perception of it. The point of it is to repeat and slowly change by small increments and see what it produces. I find it hypnotic and really interesting but its not for everyone. It is an important and influential part of the development of music though.

She's more for stuff like Billie Holiday rather than John McLaughlin. MY dad however likes Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
and what bothers my mom more of metal drumming is just how loud it is. that it's actually there.
