A question somebody asked me today and actually caught me off guard. After thinking about it I'd have to say 3 distinct stages:

Nirvana got me into guitar driven 'alternative' music. Korn and Metallica got me into heavy(er) stuff. In Flames and Arch Enemy got me into the more extreme variants of metal.

Admit it, None of us were born listening to metal and no doubt were turned on to the genre by some rather untr00 bands.

So come clean and list your 'gateway' bands. Consider it therapy!

sabbath turned me on to the whole 'idea' of metal. CoB turned me on to harsh vocals.

I only started listening to Metal 6-7 years ago. Slipknot got me into 'heavier' stuff, oh and I've liked Metallica since I was 10 or something.

Slipknot -> Blind Guardian -> Power Metal -> Edge of Sanity -> Black/Death -> Dream Theater -> Progressive Metal -> Genesis -> Progressive Rock -> A bunch of stuff -> Present.

Metallica got me into metal then i discovered their old stuff as well as slayer and sepultura. The band that got me into more underground metal was Iced Earth, I bought Day Of Purgatory without hearing anything by them before and was not let down. The Jester Race got me into shit with harsh vocals.

Umm, the first metal band I liked was Metallica. Then like many I was into nu-metal, but for quite a short amount of time.

Definitely the first band I got into that were what the media would call "extreme" metal was Opeth.

metallica 12 years ago --->

long break from any "metal" - no money --->

6 years ago revoken interest... rammstein.. bah --->

5-2,5 years ago nothing but crappy music that shouldn't be called metal by anyone.. it's too painful to talk about  --->

2,5 years ago slowly moving away from the most obvious crap without knowing what i was looking for.. tried a bit of everything including death/melodeath/a bit of fake Black Metal/progressive etc --->

2 years ago i began to lose interest in death/melodeath/progressive etc... more interested in viking and mainly black metal --->

1,5 (till now) year ago i mostly spend money on black metal. And i had a full-time job back then so i spend a hellavulot money on it. Now i'm just a poor student, he.. but still wasting my money away on it.

Metallica. Other than that I listened to a lot of heavier music. Once, I started listening to Metallica I moved towards metal quite quickly.

I had a very un-tr00 introduction to metal. It went like this

System of a Down
|
Korn
|
Cradle of Filth
|
Awesome Real Metal

I don't listen to any of those bands anymore, but I'm super greatful to all of them.

Few Metallica songs caught my interest, but it never really made me wanna hear anything else of its kind, oddly enough it wasnt until I heard Within Temptation's Dark Wings and Nightwish's Wishmaster (the song) that the world of metal just opened up, songs/bands that used to sound like crap to me all of a sudden sounded awesome, it was weird.

Led Zeppelin got me into electric guitar driven music. They're my father's favorite band ever so I started listening to them quite early.

Nu Metal and Metallica pretty much turned me off from metal in the beginning. The first time I heard Slipknot, I thought it was the worst music ever and I grew up with Load/Reload era Metallica, which isn't that good.

The band that really got me into metal was Nightwish. I heard Bless the Child on some music show and I couldn't believe my ears. Dimmu Borgir and In Flames got me into more "extreme) stuff (Ok they're not that extreme but for a metal newbie they are :P ) The first song with harsh vocals I liked was probably Dimmu Borgir - Puritania.

Tool got me into angry music with cool rhythms...Strapping Young Lad and The Dillinger Escape Plan prepared me for more extreme stuff. I also remember being introduced to Ministry via Nine Inch Nails, but I forget when that happened...

The most untr00 thing I ever liked was Fear Factory, although I guess I make up for this by disliking Maiden and Metallica ^^

i think that kinda explains my taste in music o.O

Many bands played a role, but the one that really launched me into Metal was Nevermore.

In fact, the first Metal album I bought was Enemies Of Reality.

Van Halen and Def Leppard!! I also liked a lot of Maiden and Dio. Sonata Arctica and Strato for Power metal and then CoB for harsh metal.

Angry music....worst term ever. That's what people who know nothing about metal call everything I listen too.

How disliking Maiden makes up for anything I have no clue.

Same here. Zeppelin was the beginning for me, and still remain probably my favorite band.

Hmmm, I can't really name one specific band. I would venture to guess it was just a ntural progression from all of the Hard Rock I was exposed to as a child. I loved the shit from about age 5, and it just kept progressing from there, and I've been a rabid music freak ever since. My father was also a Zeppelin fan, so it's probably a combination of them and the Vinyl copy of Pyromania my Dad gave to me.
